Czar Peter the Great developed a taste for dark Southwark ales while studying shipbuilding here in 1698 (no Bourbon in those days ;-)

Bottleshare at Leighton’s gaff. Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is airy, semi dry and has reasonable fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts, tangy. Mild spice. Tangy dark fruits. Very mild bourbon. Light semi dry finish. Pretty light all round and quite thin but no off notes. It’s a far cry from the first iteration of the base beer.

Flavour is composed of medium sweet, brown sugars, oak, jammy fruits, earthy, waxy, little funk. Palate is semi sweet, woody, medium bodied, little dusty finish.

Bottle split at Hackney Levels, thanks to the Essex Errection, 31/05/17. Light black with a decent tan cap. Nose is big on the bourbonics, JD&coke, chocolate, spice, charr, light roast, toffee fudge. Taste comprises mellow roast, chocolate, spice, mellow barrel, bourbon tones, earthy, dark fruit rinds, brown bread. Medium to full bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a light boost factor. Ok impy .. has balance but lacks depth.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Kenny. Pours black-brown with a creamy, light tan head. The nose has mellow roast, dried berries, brown bread. Medium sweet flavour with some roasty malts, moderate chocolate, low bitterness, raisins, leather. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes with hints of alcohol warmth, moderate cocoa, more dried berries, a little earthy bitterness. Not bad.

Bottle care of Kenny. It pours darkest brown - near black with a small tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, oily, toasted coconut, bounty bar, tar, toffee, sticky and roasted malt. The taste is drying, slick, oily, roasted malt, slightly tangy, metallic, earthy, wood, burnt and ashy notes with a very dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Better than expected. A bit light though.
