2014 edition of the Nickel Brook/Sawdust City 11.05 series, celebrating the November 5th birthday shared by brewers Ryan Morrow (Nickel Brook) and Sam Corbeil (Sawdust City). This year it’s a ridiculous & excessive 11.05% Triple IPA. Loaded with way too much hops and balanced with almost no malt, this one is for the hop heads only.

Tap takeover at Brothers Beer Bistro in Ottawa. This is a unique piece of work! The nose is like a sour fruit punch. A medley of fresh fruity tastes lead the way, including sour cherries, berries, grapes and green apples. The sourness is pumped up by an underlying acidity. A slight woodiness adds to the party. Rich but clean and refreshing.

Cask days 2014.
Hazy orange, medium white head. Super sticky real out pine nose, zero malt just pine, some citrus zest and booze. Sticky, viscous mouth feel, with a super soft carb. Finish is not as bitter as expected, with a very piney, soapy finish. Some citrus comes through, but it’s minimal, and the malt is there just enough to make this drinkable. As it warms the alcohol rears it’s head. A good effort.

Can: Poured a cloudy orangey color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of intense hoppy notes with some citrus and resin notes clearly identifiable. Taste is a mix of citrus hops oil with quite a bit of residual sugar notes and some burning alcohol notes. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation with too much alcohol being apparent. This is an extreme beer for sure but lack of drinkability and too much burning alcohol notes makes this a less than interesting beer.

A hazed golden amber DIPA with a thin lacing light mocha head. In aroma, loads of Citra hop, orange pulp, tropical fruit over biscuit doughy malt, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a sweet fruity caramel malt with loads of orange pulp, lychee, kiwi, very smooth, light alcohol warmth, very good and quaffable for such a big beer. On tap at Arrow and Loon.

I was excited to see this one on the board as a guest tap at Indie after my Brew Brother Freaky_tiki’s review below. It’s not often I ignore Indie’s brews on the first beer. Pours an clear rose-tinged amber tinge with a thicker white head that goes straight to lacing. Wonderful nose hops of flowers, perfume, citrus with a little straw malts. Wow! Delivers a mouth-full of vanilla, roses, citrus little that heads to bitter finish. Very intense. Very nice. The only thing is that bitter finish really builds and ends up being a little rough, which brings down the overall score. It reminds me a lot of Life Sentence, a recent Amsterdam and Great Lakes colab. Also a triple IPA.

(On tap @ barVolo, Nov 21 2014) Pours a hazy orange gold with a small white head that leaves lace. Aroma powerfully tropical fruit, pineapple, guava, soursop?, fresh hop cone resins, pale malt sweetness to support. Palate sweet, pale and lightly caramel, tropical fruit cocktail, orange juice, peppery hops, lightly bitter towards the finish, with quite a lot of alcohol heat. Fairly average body with fairly light carb. Love the fruity hop bomb character of this, and there is very little bitterness to go with it (too little even?), but the only strike against this beer for me is the booze presence. Could have been better masked to bring balance to the beer, I thought. Still quite tasty stuff.
