Take your senses on a journey. Our 2015 Russian Imperial Stout was selected Second Place for the Michael Jackson Award at the Great British Beer Festival. This beer has been aged for nine months in Tennessee whiskey barrels where it was allowed to spontaneously sour. The malt bill is comprised of imported English pale, crystal, brown and black malts with a good amount of roasted barley and flaked oats. Hopping is a very generous helping of English variety First Gold. The complex intersection of oak, roasted malt, ol’ No. 7, and tart notes will have you pondering where the next sip will take you. Za vashe zdorovie!

On cask at Mad Fox in Falls Church. Pours black with a tan head. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of sour cherries. Funky flavors -- more of a tainted flavor than a carefully conceived sour beer. Not a good way to treat the Phenomenal Crazy Ivan.

12 oz pour on draft at Mad Fox, served in a snifter. Black with thin tan head. Aromas of oak, whiskey, dark fruit and cherries, a little jam. Tastes of oak, whiskey, dark fruit, some balsamic vinegar, a bit of dark chocolate. Medium-full body with a dry and warm finish. Nice but maybe a bit rough, pretty barrel heavy.

GBBF Day 3. Cask. Opaque dark brown beer, no head. Palate is smooth with modest fine carbonation. Tangy dark malts. Big fruity bourbon soaked fruits. Modest spice. Light semi dry finish. About what you would expect and nicely delivered. Didn’t note any great sourness, just the dark malt tang.

Gigantic pour from Cask at GBBF 2015. It pours near black with a tiny light tan head. The nose is massive bourbon, sweet, sticky vanilla, rocky road, treacle, burnt sugar, bounty bar, toasty coconut, toffee and vanilla custard. The taste is rich, mildly sour, vanilla, toasted coconut, wood, bourbon, leather, liquorice, leather, salted caramel, Granny Smith apple, grape skin and some boozy warmth with a shorter than expected toasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit disappointing really. Body is not quite there for me. All about the barrel - aging. Drinks easier than it should, but I’m still not sold.
