The Rev. James ales are based on an original recipe from 1885, and named in honour of brewing legend the Rev. James Buckley, saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts. Brewed with our exclusive Buckleys yeast, they each deliver a signature taste with a surprising twist.

The Rev. James Rye is dark, dry and distinctive, brewed for a full flavour and bitter finish with unexpected glimpses of citrus and spice.

Cask at the Free Press, Cambridge. Dark ruby brown with a smattering of creamy head. Blackberry and chocolate aroma with an outside hint of smoke. The sweetness of the rye works really well here, holding its own to the end, where a refreshing hoppy bitterness tempers the finish. This is one of Brains’ better beers, and head and shoulders above the original Rev James.

Cask at GBBF. It pours clear deep mahogany brown with a small beige head. The nose is earthy, woody, cola, brown bread, spicy, leather, oily, fruit cake and toffee. The taste is smooth, bitter, oily, leather, wood, fruit cake, toasty, pepper, twiggy, spice and mild acidity with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Well- rounded and pretty drinkable stuff.
