Belle alliance italo-belge.

Bottle picked up from Dranken Geers, Oostakker, Belgium, consumed at home, Attenkirchen, Bavaria, Sunday 31st March 2019. Pours glowing gold/orange with a large white head. There is a lot going on with the aroma, slight bile touch with spice, furniture polish and cedar wood. Wow this is bitter, bit nice soft carbonation tempers things a little, sweetness runs to dryness swiftly, lots going on in the mouth, furry bitterness, good beer, really good beer.

Bouteille 75cl du pack BxlBeerFest. BB 08/2020.

Another one way too old to be judged, but this one at least kept a lot of its hop bitterness.

Good, just-lightly yellowish head, dense, over bright orange, faintly clouded beer. Serious grapey & fruity hosp, but also asafoetida, bit cheesy. Faint cookies malt. Slight metallic bitterness, very dry hops, light fruitiness - mainly citrus. Again some toasted malts in the flavour, but no sweetness. Quite hopoil-slick, as well as medium bodied, but nowhere thick. Medium carbonation. Actually quite good. Strange that I get hardly any or even no wheat.

Fred Magerat, the sympathetic and well-known owner of the Brabant brewery, has produced a whole string of different beer styles each bearing his personal and usually rather unique, sometimes eccentric stamp; this is his take on white (or wheat) IPA, as usual from a 75 cl bottle. Thick, rough and coarse, irregular, tightly cobweb-lacing, off-white head, not very stable (in spite of the wheat ànd hops used here) and eventually diminishing to a thin ring; misty peach blonde robe with ochre-ish hue, cloudy in the end. Aroma of absinthe wormwood leaves, angostura bitter, dried grapefruit peel, green olives, gari and wakame, rusk, pear, dried apricot, white pepper, old bread crust. Fruity, ‘Belgian estery’ onset, apricot, some (green) banana and red apple, softly sweetish with a sourish undertone which is a bit accentuated by the wheat; spritzy carbonation, supple and slick, rather soapy but not unpleasant mouthfeel. Bread crust-like, somewhat fluffy, rounded malt body, wheat is noticeable as a dim soapiness in the background but not very outspoken (I’m wondering what percentage was used here). Hop bitterness, in a very rooty, spicy, grapefruity and almost bitter poisonous weed-like way, is apparent early on, becomes very strong in the end and keeps drying the finish for a long time, over lingering fruity notes and bready, earthy yeastiness. Like his Kanguru I had the day before, this is very uncompromisingly hop bitter, in a harsh, weedy kind of way – something you’ll either love or hate, but I can take it and emptied the entire bottle without any effort; admittedly though, this one is somewhat less harshly hop bitter and somewhat sweeter and fruitier than Kanguru, so in that sense perhaps better balanced. Typical Brabant IPA, quite different especially seen the intended style.

Hazy gold amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is smooth and fairly dry, decent find carbonation. Mild minerals. Light dry malts, a reasonable level of sweetness. Some twangy bitterness and some modest hop dust - bitterish. Tangy tropical fruits, some bitterish red berries. Tangy floralness. Trace of blackcurrant. Dry bitterish finish. Tangy bitter linger. Despite it's tangy bitterness it kind of works. Goes down pretty well.
