Handpull cask at Pint Shop, Birmingham. There was a wonderful storyline in Corrie a few years back where a celebrity chef (seemingly modelled on Heston Blumenthal) ate breakfast at Roy's Rolls and praised Roy Cropper as a true English chef. His fans, he said, didn't want simple English cooking, but dishes such as 'Vindaloo ice cream'. Anyway, a lot of crafty brewers seems to be trialling basic bitters with English hops. Preparation for no deal perhaps, or an interest in getting back to basics? Either way, I'm intrigued by the golden brown beer before me. There's biscuity toffee malt and scratchy medicinal hop, but it's clean and enticing unlike the macro bitters so iften pushed our way. Malt-led taste with a resinous, almost gluey bitterness nearer the finish. Long aftertaste with physalis and biscuit spread. While I wouldn't turn down a Vindaloo ice cream IPA on occasion, it's nice to have the beer equivalent of Roy Cropper's full English.

Cask @ Cask, Manchester. Copper with a small head. Has a bitterness but there’s a strong grainy taste and flavour to this ale, also evident in its aroma. It’s gritty and raw in this respect.

Earl Of Essex. Cask. Lightly hazy gold beer, tangy white head. Palate is light and dry with modest fine carbonation. Mild creamy malts. Soap! Mild but persistent. Dry finish. Another pretty off cask beer at the Earl of Essex. Strongly suspect this is a problem with the pub and not the brewery, too many duff ones in recent times.
