As experiments go, this looks like a rather successful one. The hops used in this pale golden beer (codenamed EXP#05256) are descended from the Apollo and Merkur varieties and were secretively grown somewhere in the famous Yakima Valley in Oregon.

They provide a robust, pleasant citrus aroma, with gooseberries and raspberries evident also. Here’s hoping that they live on, perhaps with a more memorable name so that we can use them again.

500ml bottle. Clear, yellow, pale golden colour with average to huge, foamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Strawy, slightly fruity and yeasty aroma, a touch of brett (infection), funk, perfumed hops, Hubba Bubba bubblegum. Taste is fruity hoppy with slightly artificial bubblegum touch, hints of gooseberry, some funk, some mineral, some straw. I’m not quite sure...

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, Old Street, London, 22 Nov 2013) Golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, hoppy nose with grass, citrus and biscuity malt. Malty, fruity taste with notes of citrus, grass, tropical fruit, biscuits and a balanced citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Refreshing and tasty. Quite nice.

Almost clear gold beer with a good size fluffy white head. Lovely peachy nose and a little apricot. Palate is light and dry and crispy. Mild minerals. Dry thin malt. Hops follow the nose - nice peach with a whisper of strawberry. Finishes dry and crisp. A pleasantly fruity golden with these very nice new hops.
