Ah! The joys of a crushable beer. A beer that hits the spot on a warm afternoon in the sun, tastes so good after a long bike ride or cools your dancing fever. Light in alcohol, Whitebait has 20% wheat for a soft flavour, while the Magnum & Cascade hops give it
the refreshing aromas of oranges with a hint of spice. As no style really fits, we decided to call it out for what it is: A crushable ale.

Can crushed at home in the sun. Slight hazy golden with white head. Paper, sweet malts, lime, dough, flowery, bread crust. Indeed crushable and tasty, but also a bit too bready maybe. Medium sweet, light bitter and very light tart. Just medium bodied.

Hazy yellow colour, white foam. Dry, citrussy, lots of carbonation. Rather thin body. Nothing special.

Wheat beer from this accomplished Utrecht brewery, again bearing a fish-related name. Irregularly shaped but thickly mousy, cobweb-lacing, greyish off-white, uneven-bubbled, well-retaining though opening head on an initially near-clear, 'old gold' coloured beer with pale apricot hue and strong swirls of sparkling rising up from the bottom, shifting to a peachy mistiness with sediment added. Aroma of white bread crust, straw, lemon zest, hand soap, dried banana peel, apricot, hints of freshly cut cucumber, pear juice, dried kaffir lime leaf, grass, pita bread dough, dry orange pith, lavender, hydrangea blossoms. Crisp, mildly fruity onset, restrainedly sweetish, hinting vaguely at dried apricot, unripe peach, green banana and apple peel, sourish edge, lively carbonation fit for the style; smooth-edged, lean malt body, nicely bread-crusty and a tad cracker-like but also showing off clear wheat sourishness and soapiness, with a somewhat doughy effect, leading to a dryish and notably quenching finish, adding some light spicy phenols as well as floral and old citrus peel-like hoppiness, moderately but confidently bitter in a slightly earthy way, yet still refreshing and mildly aromatic. Minerally, bready, wheat-soapy and flowery aspects linger. Very 'crushable' indeed, as announced; Anglo-Saxon style wheat ale lurks around the corner (even the classic O'Hanlon's Goldblade), but so do the more 'idiosyncratic' variations on Pierre Celis' Belgian witbier theme, think Blanche des Honnelles by Abbaye des Rocs, for example. A 'generic' kind of modern wheat ale, in a sense, broadly displaying its wheat content while remaining relatively restrained and focused on bittersweet drinkability. An easygoing beer - certainly when compared to Kromme Haring's more showy offerings - but a very quenching and elegant one as well, technically flawless and refreshing, as a good wheat ale (certainly at this ABV) should be. It did meet my expectations in any case, so I certainly enjoyed it.

Sample from can at Logitech Bierproeverij 4. Color: Clear golden, white head. Aroma: Hoppy, wheat, fruity, somewhat herbal. Taste: Hoppy, bittery with subtle citrus fruit, herbal hints. Smooth. Low carbonation. Easy drinkable, not that special but overall quite nice.

Bottle. Golden color. Hint of Apple in the shyish aroma. Thin, wheaty flavor with Apple. Some distant hops. Kromme Haring can do better.

(Draught at Café Derat, Utrecht, 14 Feb 2019) Golden amber colour, hazy, with frothy white head. Fruity nose with notes of peaches, citrus, grass and bread. Malty, fruity taste with bread, apricots, peaches, grass and a mild grassy bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Mild and easily drinkable wheat ale/wit. Quite enjoyable.
