A dark roasted coffee and vanilla porter with a hint of danger. A nod to the speed-crazed bikers who risked life and limb to race from one greasy spoon café to the next.

Ik waardeer het zoetige, maar iets te dun en waterig. Te generiek. Interessant wat een goeie barrel hier mee zou doen.

Bottle taken away from BrewDog Leicester, drunk at home. Dark purplish brown, opaque, with a small light brown head. Chocolate-covered espresso beans and tiny bits of liquorice and blackberry in the aroma. Sweet taste with a little bit of a earthy bitter kick nearer the finish. Plum and strong coffee in the aftertaste. Heavy carbonation. Pretty simple stuff, and very enjoyable indeed.

Scottish vanilla and coffee porter, from a can bought from Beerdome near Groningen; gushes a bit upon opening, but manageable. An enormous, glass-filling, inches thick, pillowy, rocky, membrane-lacing, papier maché-like, pale beige head forms, only slowly thinning over an opaque black beer. Aroma is initially a bit blocked by the thick layer of foam, but releases impressions of coffee powder, sourish old black coffee and - even more so - raw green coffee beans, vanilla beans, (strong) hazelnuts, milk chocolate, cola, freshly cut red apple, ginger candy, toffee, Baileys, notes of 'blood' iron, rosewater, lavender blossoms, liquorice candy, wet leather, Stevia and fresh basil leaves, tea bags, almond. Sweet onset, chocolate-coated raisins and candied fig with a pronounced sourish undertone strongly accentuated by the - unsurprisingly seen the gushing and towering head formation - sharpish carbonation, very minerally especially for this style; lean, slick body, oily but indeed a little bit 'marred' by that sharp carbonation. Rounded hazelnutty and milk chocolatey malt middle with the sourishness continuing, residual brown sugariness as well but not in an overly cloying way, leading to an expressively coffee-like roasty bitter finish, mouth-filling but tempered by that chocolate- and hazelnut paste-like sweetness - and a the same time embellished by retronasal vanilla. A light metallic effect, no idea if this comes from the can or not, accompanies the whole flavour 'parcours' but doesn't disturb me too much. Spicy hop bitterness supports the coffee effect in the end, with a pleasantly peppery note lingering among the maltiness, which, by the time it has reached the finish, has acquired more bitterness than sweetness. Not sure if I would race to a café for this one, but in comparison with many other similarly flavoured porters, this is quite successful, a bit 'dark green' herbal and too metallic perhaps, rather overcarbonated for the style as well, but nonetheless offering an interesting array of flavours which are quite neatly put together. I had way worse in this segment.

330ml can. Jet black colour with average to huge, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Dark malty aroma, notes of vanilla, a touch of clove. Taste is sweet-ish dark malty, notes of vanilla, vanilla and vanilla. Did I mention vanilla? Lingering bitter, roasty finish with notes of - guess what - yes, vanilla! Sorry, but that's too much vani... too little coffee.

Can from Freshfield Market Croydon and drunk on a train. Dark brown colour lasting tan head. I can smell the coffee and chocolate from a foot away. Smooth nutty coffee and chocolate flavour. Coffee is there no doubt but not too huge. Some creaminess in the mouthfeel then some prickly tongue finish. Rather good. Could be fuller but I love the praline edge. Good beer.
