This Double Stout began as a creamy, smooth base of oats and lactose and dark brown sugar as part of a complex grist alongside seven other malts. Balanced additions of raspberry and honey then enhanced this dessert beer to new heights. Even more depth and complexity comes from eleven months ageing in barrels.

Stop 1 on the Imperial March. Fruity, with the barrel flavours hitting in the finish.

Cask @ Victorian Craft Beer Cafe, Halifax. Black with a small head. Its barrel ageing is immediately evident in both aroma and taste - the spirits influence too. The raspberry and honey develop but become very evident too.

Black beer, thick light-tan head. Smell has a little of the raspberry, giving it some tartness cutting through what is otherwise boozy, sugary and warm. Flavour follows suit. A good hit of raspberry which holds its own against the spirits, which are sweet, rich and warming and laid over a good maltiness, some brown sugar with a mellow honey flavour there throughout. Sweet without being sickly, there's a real booziness to it and it's super tasty.

Can shared at CBJ. Pours clear, deep brown with a foamy, khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with nice dark fruits, grape, raisins, toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Balanced finish, toasted malts, a little cocoa, more dark fruits. Great stuff.

Bottleshare at CBJ. Thanks to me. Near opaque dark brown beer, small but tidy tan head. Airy and semi dry palate, decent fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts, a modest dark chocolate. Raspberry quite obvious but soft and never tart. The barrelling is pretty generic and recessed. A mild tartness and a little balancing honey sweetness on the end. A curious brew but pretty quaffable.
