Bottle 1038 from 2592, from Rudat, Dortmund; 9.5% ABV
The color is very dark, not completely black; essentially no head. Mild aroma of roasted malt, meaty, a bit earthy. The mouthfeel is lean, and smooth; good caramel flavor, with a touch of roasted malt and coffee; light sourness from the dark malts. Correct bitterness.
Not spectacular, but quite vibrant nevertheless.

Bottle at Bruce’s new pad, thanks to Paulo, 15/10/13. Bottle # 44/2592. Light black with a moderate tan head that dissipates to a pond and edgework. Nose is treacle toffee, light roast, dark malts, bitter chocolate, brown sugars, smoke. Taste comprises toffee fudge, whisky booze tones, treacle toffee, molasses, brown sugars. Medium bodied, again a little on the thin side for an 8% offering, light booze in the finale. Decent enough impy, good flavour profile, just let down a little by the thin body.

Tasting at Bruce’s new pad. Thanks to Paul for this tasty Scottish treat. Light haze on this dark brown beer. Small bubbly pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry with light fine carbonation. Dark chocolate malt, bitter. Nice tangy and fruity whisky. Light spice. Finishes light and dry.

Bottle #44/2592 picked up at the brewery. It pours darkest brown with a small light tan head. The nose is earth, roasty, toast, mild smoke, vanilla and coconut. The taste is smooth roast, toast, earth, salted liquorice, caramel, wood and cocoa with a dry, bitter-sweet finish. Medium+ body and fine, prickly carbonation. Smooth and tasty. Very drinkable indeed.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - many thanks to Paul. Pours clear black-brown with a soft, beige cream head. The nose holds burnt wood, burnt toast, some baking cocoa. Medium sweet flavor with dry cocoa, good roasted malts, some earthy bitterness, rich brown bread, light coffee. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Decent warmth to finish, dry chocolate, charred wood, dirt, subtle coffee, very tasty, good balance. Solid.

Bottle shared with Ashton McCobb - Cheers! Pours with a better head than the sherry butt version, but there the similarity ends. Taking it up a percentage point in strength has not improved this beer. Too much alcohol burn. Should maybe have been kept back a few more months before releasing to the general public. Might buy a bottle to age for a year or two to see if it mellows.

33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours opaque black with a nice crema head. The nose and taste are very single dimensional compared to the sherry butt version. There’s massive alcohol burn on the nose and taste and apart from oak and alcohol, there isn’t much else. The palate is very big, very long and has a big alcohol burn. Overall, this one didn’t work out so well in my opinion.
