Bottle (12 oz). Pours a predictably dark and thick brown with a dense dark khaki head. Aromas are very full... roasted malt and chocolate, cherries and prunes, a bit of yeasty dustiness and just a touch of smoke or peat. Flavor starts off wonderfully, with a huge chocolaty malt that slowly transitions into a bit of alcoholic hotness and some cherry-like fruitiness before fading back into a sweet chocolate finish. Mouthfeel is thick and silky and works well with the chocolate and vanilla flavors. I don’t know if I have a particularly strong bottle or what, but I can’t see this scoring as lowly as it does.

Pitch black coloured body at 90% opacity, some brown getting through on the sides. Odd brown head that sounds exactly like a coke when poured, but fades fast...interesting - never seen a beer of quality do that. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, meat, mushrooms and a bit of chocolate. Medium-bodied; Strong assertive roasted malt flavour with coffee and chocolate coming out most with more meat and mushrooms soon afterwards. Oak, vanilla and whiskey come in as well. Aftertaste shows some of the odd pungent flavours with alcohol and malt too noticeable. Overall, a bit too sharp on the edges, add in some of the ’meaty’ qualities and then top it off for a 13+% abv beer in a 65 cL bottle - and I think it’s way too much. I’d rather have this in a twelve ounce bottle for half the price...but it’s a stupid tactic that brewers got themselves into to make more money. Overall, not really worth trying, but chances are you are probably going to buy it anyways. I’d be more happy trying another imperial stout in a smaller bottle, or an actual Belgian Stout (non-imperial) in a 25 or at most 33 cL bottle. I sampled this 65 cL massive bottle purchased at Ramsey Liquors in Ramsey, New Jersey on 19-January-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 08-March-2009.

Bottle Pours out a dark brown topped with a small tan head. Aroam was not of most Imperial Stout. It was of pit fruit roast malts and some belg yeast. Tast was once again very interesting. Very complex with lots of pit fruit and roast malts. The belg yeast really plays in along with some sweetness. And then to top it off it is 13.6% ABV. Very different but tasty.

Bottle at Capital Ale House - Midlothian on 08/05/2008. Dark black body with a small brown head. Sweet caramel and rum-soaked fruit aroma. Spice, molassas, caramel and rum-soaked fruit flavor. Long lasting spice sticks in the aftertaste. Full body with moderate carbonation.

On draught at Birreria Paradiso. Black with dark brown head. Tastes like a red or port wine but with a bitter finish. Interesting but needs more complexity perhaps with aging.

Bottle thanks to TURDFERGESON. Pours thick with a dark brown head and a black body that fades. Good lacing left. Aroma is booze, chocolate, grains, molasses, brown sugar, a couple of fruity esters and a bit of banana and smoke. Taste is a nice Belgian yeast fruitiness, alcohol, chocolate, roast and a bit of metal in the finish. Love the alcohol presence. Syrupy with light carbonation and some espresso mixed with the alcohol warming.

2012 rating: Near black and inky. No head. Viscous and leaves legs. Aroma is intense, with some soy sauce hints, plums and burnt fruitcake. Silky body, with intense alcohol and dark fruit notes, with just a hint of milk chocolate. Smooth, with rich dark malts, light chocolatey accent, and finishes with a rush of alcohol that makes it a bit more drinkable. This one definitely improved with aging - it finally lives up to its "balanced, smooth and tasty" billing.

Dark brown colour. Light chocolate and acetone nose. I see it’s 13.6, might explain that acetone nonsense. Full, chewy body is full of burnt dark fruit. This is intense, alcoholic, very rich. Could stand another 10 or 15 years to mellow into something a bit more refined. 5-3-7-3-13 = 3.1

750 ml bottle. Wow, amazing brew. I had been putting off drinking this one for quite some time, as I was unsure as to how I would really react to a 13+ percent ABV beer. Well, I survived with some help. Pours a pitch black color. Aroma is dried fruits, with dark chocolate, spices, bananas, and coffee. Flavor is a complex mix of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, and dried fruits. Strong alcohol taste, but much more mellow than I initially would have expected. I’m gonna have to grab another bottle and keep one in storage.

Pours deep black into a snifter. Mocha head recedes to hint rim. Boozy pit fruit and dark caramel aromas. Tingly and sweet upfront with a sharp chocolate and espresso alcohol in the finish.

Pours black with brown head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate and alcohol that burns my nose. Similar flavors with lots of alcohol and cough medicine. Way too much alcohol for me too really enjoy. A couple of years might mellow this one out. Full body with minimal carbonation.
