Using the wonderful Summit hop, this beer is an enticing battleground between aroma and a full-on dark malt taste. A heavy but drinkable pint with black treacle, licorice and roasted coffee flavours finishes long and bitter. A proper mouthful!

Cask at the Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell, 13/04/13. Very dark mahogony brown with no head. Nose is light roast malt, treacle toffee, brown sugars. Taste comprises dark malt, light citrus, demerara sugar, cardboard. Medium bodied, no carbonation, flat as a pancake. Some flavour in there but the conditioning is terrible - needs a re-reate.

Cask at CBC Clerkenwell - London. This beer is in extremely poor condition. Completely flat, lightly sticky, lots of burnt malts, faint cocoa. Really, this beer is in dire shape. Pours murky brown with no head. The flavor is OK, but beyond that it’s hard to derive much joy from drinking this.

Cask at the Harp, London on 14th April 2013. Intensely black with pale tan head and almost no lacing. Intense roasty aroma with smoke and spice. Richly roast and burnt in-mouth with exquisite leafiness and nuttiness. Bitter end with fruits and leafy grassiness. Velvet-smooth mouthfeel and medium body. Best thing I have drunk so far in 2013.

Cask at Charie’s Bar, Copenhagen. A black beer with a red shine under a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of choocolate, alcohol, roasted malt, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish.

From cask at Charlies. Pours dark brown with a deep amber glare and a small off white head. Aroma is fruity and roasted malty. Coffee, toffee, breadish and roasted. Bitter, light fruity and solid roasted malt base. Bitter and lingering dark malty finish.

Cask at CBC, Clerkenwell. It pours darkest brown with pretty much no head. The nose is mellow roast, liquorice, coffee, leather, faint smoke and a touch of acidity. The taste is light roast, coffee, liquorice, toast, mellow, wood, ash, and earth with a dry, bitter finish. Light-medium body and pretty much no carbonation. Some good flavours, but ultimately the condition kills this beer.
