The Ryehopper began as a fall seasonal and has now found it’s way into our regular line-up. The brewers noticed a lack of rye beers in the Asheville area and wanted to fill that gap. This beer represents assistant brewer Chris Richards’ first recipe released by the brewery. The malted rye contributes both a rounded maltines and a sharp earthy flavor, bridging the maltiness of the barley and the bitterness of the hops. In essence, the Ryehopper is a hoppy rye beer. Seriously, what else did you expect?

Not bad at all. Good earthy malt base coupled with a very prolonged, dry finish. Rye malts bring out a mildly tart streak, yet the hopping keeps the malts from reaching true potential. Tasty but a little less piney bitterness would benefit the rye.

Bottle. Poured a clear amber with a lasting light brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Aroma was full of earthy pine and grass notes with a rye and bread backing. Flavor had a similar earthy hop note that was joined by a dark bread and a rye spice as well. It had an odd musty note throughout as well.

Bottle - thanks mixmasterob. Pours a golden orange color with a finger of creamy beige head. Soft aroma of citrus with some dry floral notes. Tastes sweeter up front with citrus and caramel before the rye kicks in. Finished dry and spicey.

On tap at the Mellow Mushroom in Asheville, NC. It pours deep gold with weak head. The aroma is a mix of spiciness and sweet malts and little else. The taste has a pleasing mix of rye spicy twang but the malt sweetness becomes a bit much after a half glass. The after taste leaves faint levels of rye, floral hops and a touch of citrus.

22 oz bottle sent my way by Suttree. Pour is a slight haze copper orange with a one an off white one inch head that falls with lacing. Aroma of big grain, toasty, fresh baking multi grain bread, nice soft Rye character - very soft and full at the same time. Nice nose. Taste has the Rye up closer to the front, followed closely behind by more straightforward toasted malted barley character, transitioning back to big Rye. The taste is much more one dimensional than the nose, and really lacks the softness. The aftertaste is strong on the Rye and some bitter pine and earthy hops. Palate is medium, with normal carbonation. This was a well done Rye beer, and the assertiveness fit for what they were going for I am sure. I was hoping for a bit more softness following the nose, but it was still nice. Thanks for sending this one to me Phil, it was a fun one.

22oz. Pours copperish, thick off-white head. Aroma of rye, hops up front, light malt, hints of spices and pine. Flavor was surprisingly good. Right balance of hops and rye, and somehow the palate was nicely toasted and malty. Hints of coffee mixed with the rye, adding citrus hops in the finish.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Greens Discount Beverage - Atlanta (Buford Hwy), 5/11/09
Aroma: Lots of rye, caramel, grass, nutty, citrus
Appearance: Really cloudy red brown color, creamy off-white head, decent lacing
Flavor: Dominated by the rye malts, with some hops filling in the mid to late palates
Palate: Nice mouthfeel, palate (like the taste) improves from start to finish
Overall Impression: Not a huge fan of the initial flavor, but it improves to be a solid rye beer in the middle and finish. More bitter then your standard rye.
