Here’s a little something to stoke your boiler. This year’s barley wine is full of rich malt flavours and aged in bourbon barrels. Mildly carbonated, Trainwreck should be served at cellar temperature (8C). Careful not to derail your caboose.

An orange amber barleywine with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with light vinous notes, light woody notes, alcohol warmth, a tad cloying. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity caramel malt with light butterscotch, light mineral notes, light woody notes, alcohol warmth, OK. Bottle at Per’s Almost gone tasting, March 2017.

Poured from 650mL bottle [oak aged 2016]. Amber brown with light beige head. Light vanilla, toffee, light alcohol. Definitely a trainwreck of a barley wine.

Amber-brown. Thin, bubbly head. The aroma is malty, with caramel, stewed fruits, and a light oaky note. Sweet up front, sticky caramels, light fruitiness, and then finishing more with strong oaky and alcohol notes. Not the best-balanced or most refined barley wine I’ve ever had, but it’s not totally out of whack. The problem of course is that when you’re being asked to invest your liver in a bomber of barley wine, you’re probably going to want a bit more payoff than just "it’s okay."

Thick on the barrel here. Booze and barrel aroma is huge and controlling. Pours reddish brown with ok lacing and head. Astringent and oaky finish. Malt in aroma as well. Brought by Liam or Pino (can’t remember).

2013-02-23, bottle from Legacy Liquor Store, Vancouver, 7-4-7-3-13=34
Dark mahogany color with creamy beige head. It has evident bourbon / vanilla aroma. The mouthfeel is smooth; the ordinary Trainwreck doesn’t provide much flavor, but the cask is well present; caramel flavor with moderate residual sweetness; quite high alcohol perception.

2013-01-22, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 7-5-7-3-13=35
Dark amber color with creamy head. Strong Bourbon aroma. It has some nice malt and caramel flavor, with a very strong and pleasant Bourbon vanilla presence; correct bitterness, with an impression of vegetables in the end, and some boozy character; medium sweetness. Maybe a bit cloying overall.
Not yet a classic, but the barrel made wonders to the dramatic original Trainwreck ;-)
