Frye’s Leap IPA is an intense experience. From the American caramel malt, which gives Frye’s Leap IPA its golden color, to the unique and intense dry-hopped aroma of pine and grapefruit, this beer is every bit as exciting as its namesake.

Out of the bottle today at Portland Pie. Pours a solid golden yellow color with a thinnish off white head that slowly dissipates. Smells of citrus hops mostly, its an old school aroma of bitter hops with a hint of caramel and bready backbone. The flavor follows the aroma quite well, citrus and a hint of pine flavor and bitterness with just enough malt to keep it form being astringent. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick resinous mouthfeel. Nice IPA, not great but much better than some of the other options at the Shipyard pie company.

This brew is a clear copper-gold color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of citrus and malt. Light-bodied with a mildly bitter hops character with some metallic notes behind it. Touches of sweet malt and ripe fruit as well. The finish is short and hoppy. Not up to par.

Draft, brewpub Portland. Transparent golden color, tiny white head, some how even with light head it did have some retention. Nose of citrus hops and mild malt. Taste has a solid amount of bitterness. Hopheads would like this, if not they have a double IPA. This has a nice lingering bitterness that stayed with me after I finished. Only down fall is the body is thin.

Sweet bonus IPA from a recent trade, thank you. The 12oz bottle pours clear copper with thin gold hues and small off white head. The aroma offers up a nice pine hoppiness mixing with muted yet malt sweetened tangelo and a touch of toffee. I like the level of pine but something else there isn’t mingling too well. I think I’m getting a bit of earthy hops and toffee too. The taste is similar with some pleasing bitter pine hops that are deepened by some sweet malts and a light amount of citrus hoppiness. The hops maintain a nice hop bitterness all the way through into the finish but also deliver a moderate level of hop flavor to keep it interesting. Darn nice IPA.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Clear amber with a small off-white head. Nice aroma of floral, citric and slightly piney hops and hints of cookies. Later whiffs reveal some graininess. Bitter hoppy flavor with only very light caramelly sweetness. Medium-bodied. A bit one-dimensional, but quite enjoyable and quaffable.

tap at the Portland location - Finally, IPAs surpass the near worthless style that is Pale Lager as my most rated style! Ahem... this brew pours golden with a long lasting white head that laces heavily. It has a big citrus hop aroma and flavor with crisp hops and some malty sweetness to provide some balance and a medium body. Good IPA.

i try to be as objectional about english ipa’s as possible, and most american english-style ipa’s are really good up front, its the second half of the pint that gets a little annoying. once your palate gets used to the hops, its the malts that start to get that sickly sweet, almost nutrisweet flavor that is in no way appetizing or satisfying, it just tastes artificial.

Nice slightly cloudy orange/copper coloured body with a dense, thick tan head that leaves a pretty ugly lace. Aroma of fresh grassy and piney hops with a touch of grapefruit, pineapple and resin. Medium-bodied; Assertive piney and floral hoppiness with some light malt to support and a touch of light apricot sweetness, but mostly an unabashed hoppiness - which is okay. Aftertaste is mild, only some light bitterness shows through - fairly one-dimensional. Overall, a decent IPA, not great, but showing some good hoppy notes and a touch of other character. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Colonial Spirits in Acton, Massachusetts on 23-September-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 30-November-2010.

On tap at Sebago Portland , ME location. Pours out orange/copper topped with a nice white head. Aroma was of citrus and pine hops along with a light malt. Taste was more of the citrus and pine hops along with a little sweet malt to help hold it together.

Draught, 6.2% at the brewpub. Good grapefruity hop aroma. Hazy copper colour. Small frothy white head. The flavour has a little grapefruit and caramel as many other APAs, but also a distinct teaish hop note. High bitterness, clean.
