This “Polish Style Kolsch” is made with eastern European hops and has just a little more than expected when dealing with a Kolsch.

Bottle @ Brad’s house Minneapolis. Pours a hazy, dark orange appearance with a cream colored head. Spicy, grainy, oaty, chex mix, a touch fruity aroma. Tangy, grainy malty, cereal, quite spicy, light blood orange appearance. This wasn’t all that bad but everything about it didn’t seem like a Kolsch.

Dark, opaque brown, with some chunks of sediment in the bottle. Lager yeast aroma. Bitter hop and grain flavor, with a palate that is a little heavy for the style, a thick kolsch. It is not a bad beer, even if different to style, and what is a Polish style kolsch anyway?

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours cloudy orange amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some light spotty lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of apples, pear, caramel, toast, bread, herbal, floral, grass, and light earth. Ok aromas but they were fairly weak and unbalanced; possible fermentation issues due to apple in aromas. Taste of pear, caramel, toast, biscuit, grass, floral, apple, and light herbal spiciness. Light spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruit, caramel, toast, biscuit, grass, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a short bit. Fairly dry on the finish. Pretty good flavor balance and complexity; no cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slightly crisp mouthfeel that is ok. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Very easy to drink as expected. Overall this is an ok brew. Definitely not a kolsch, but has some decent flavor and balance. Pretty enjoyable.

Sampled from the tap at the 15th annual MBGSF. Pours a clear deep gold with a slight amber hue and an off-white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a lot of sweet grains with a bit of earthy grass with a cookie note as well. Flavor is easy to drink with some light sweet grains and grass with some popcorn and cookie in the finish.

Bottle. This is the darkest example of the style I have seen. A deep coppery amber with a dense beige head. Aromas are spicy with a distinctly peppery edge. Flavor is sticky and sweet with a caramel and bread dough sugariness that gives way to a lovely spicy finish. Almost like pepper and cinammon or something. This is a nice beer, but I think I like the lighter varieties I have tried better as summer beers.

Bottle. Caramel malt and light spice aroma. Cloudy brown amber with a small off-white head. Caramel, burnt toast, and herbal bitter hops flavor. Medium body, light carbonation. Nothing about this beer is like a kolsch. If I were rating to style it would be a 0.5. Honestly, it reminds me more of a less than stellar amber.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Hazy straw body, thin creamy off-white head. Light, sweet nose with light fruits, primarily white grape and pear. Soft body with light sweetness, white grape, hints of honey, and a grassy bitterness. Hints of alcohol.

Served on draft at the Tipsy Cow in Madison, WI at the GTMW pre-party. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium sized creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet pale malts and grassy hops. The taste is toasted malts, nutty notes and grassy hops. Medium bodied. Nice kolsch.
