12 oz. bottle from a 6 pack. Local Market Basket. Used a tulip. Deep brown / muddy water color with thin off-white head, really good retention. Nice roasted chocolate malt aroma. Taste is chocolate malt upfront with pine and citrus hop notes, nothing too aggressive, which makes it easier for the roasted notes to come through. Earthy tones come through as well. Has a hoppy porter feel for me…. I’ll have no problem finishing the rest of the sixer. Great effort from the brewers from Burlington, Vt.

Dark brown body with a thinnish, one centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of funky malt, raisins, oak, mushrooms and meat with a very small amount of hops - not pleasant at all. Light-bodied; Assertive roasty malt flavours at first with some raisins and a thin roasty coffee flavour too. Aftertaste shows a little bit of hops, some light malt, some nuts and not much else - very mild and not much flavours. Overall, a pretty mild beer with not much going on here except for a roasty malt note and a touch of light hops. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 22-July-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 07-August-2011.

12oz bottle-trade with jtclockwork-pours a tight to rich tan head with trailing lace and brown color. Aroma is roasty/cocoa-dark malt-secondary pine. Taste is biting hops, then roasty/dusty-dark malt.

very smooth. black like a porter, and roasted malty more than hoppy. not bad, very easy to drink, and this is a style that is going to appeal to a mass crowd, but that also means that there is some tough competition. not bad, not going to knock your socks off.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a medium tan head and aromas if chocolate malt, an odd licorice presence and some medicinal smelling hops. Flavor isn’t much better. Kind of a hodgepodge of things stuffed together without much direction or harmony. Additionally, it seems to have gone a bit sour.

Well, I guess a black ipa is not an imperial stout now, is it? Pine tar mild aroma. First taste is big bitter impact along with a stouty or porter background. Stronger deep beer with personality. Yes, just as rude as many imp stouts and in the same way. A little sizzly. Wew, plowing action down between the side of my cheeks and my teeth. Yes a dark beer it is fer sher, wew. Long bitter dark beer finish like a baltic porter with an ipa bite. Is it possible my palate is getting numbed and ruined from IPA? Nasty nellie.

Bottle from the spring sampler. Pours a dark brown color with a medium frothy brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, roast and earthy hops. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, earthy hops and a bit of a leathery note. Medium bodied. Not bad, but more like a porter than a Black IPA.

Pours black into a shaker. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface leaving spider lacing. Sour smoked chocolate aromas. Sweet and dry chocolate from front to back. Dry medium length mocha finish.
