Bottle from beermerchants.com. A black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate, some coffee, slightly hoppy and bitter. Decent stuff as usual from the Kernel.

500ml bottle, 5.3% abv, (columbus written on the opposite side of the label), bought at the microbrewery. Devil-black body. Creamy, tan-coloured head. Sweet aroma of earthy malts. Cocoa taste with a backdrop of spices and juicy malts. Coffee bitterness to the finish. Well made, tasty beer (shared with Finn, hotel room, London 04.11.2012).

Bottle, picked up from ’Jacks’ Westholme Stores’, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon consumed at home Wednesday 17.10.11 Pours black with a light beige head. Coffee and chocolate on nose and Loz said she could smell the chocolate on me, though she thought it wasn’t so apparent on the nose. Hoppy, roasty and smooth in mouth with a lovely juicy hoppiness combining well with the bitter and roastiness. Good, actually its very good. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9

Bottle at home in London. Having read the myriad descriptions of this beer’s gushing abilities I opened it near the sink. Thankfully it was nothing more than a mild frother, and I’m happy to say I didn’t lose any beverage. The beer pours dark brown with a strong, frothy beige head. Lovely nose of rich cocoa, sticky pine and burnt grass. Light to medium sweet flavor with burnt sugars, burnt grass and wood, moderate roast, some dirt and cocoa. Medium bodied with lively, mouth-filling carbonation. Fairly dry to finish with burnt earth, wood, some bitter cocoa, grass, pine, mild roast. The condition is certainly not optimal but the beer is still good.

Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchants, Brockley. If Vesuvius and Krakatoa combined it still wouldn’t be a patch on this gusher! Jesus! It absolutely exploded! After all the excitement (and a lot less beer left to pour in the glass) the head eventually goes down and leaves it unsurprisingly flat to leave a murky brown pour with a beige head. Licorice, fruitcake and some coffee aroma. Chocolate, sweet spice and coffee flavour. Sharp bitter edge. Bitter finish. Would love to try this without the gush.

Bottle at The Hope, Carshalton. It pours dark brown, with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, coffee, pine, earth, chocolate and tar. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, rich chocolate, pine, resinous hops and earth, with some decent bitterness in the finish. Medium body and medium carbonation. Thankfully not as lively or chunky as others have found it! A solid porter, but I preferred the last Bramling Cross version.
