Beguiling and more than meets the eye, akin to the ebony bird of the famous poem. Six malts as well as oats give this sweet stout its sumptuous base. Expect bitter yet silky chocolateyness from cocoa nibs and chocolate malt which gives way to smoky sweetness from bourbon liquor and oak. The Raven is a moreish combination and certainly not a case of ‘nevermore’.

Hand-pulled half-pint in Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, Oakengates on 2nd Aug 2021. Black with a smooth beige head that stayed the distance. Nice malty/chocolatey nose and taste, soft on the palate mouthfeel wise. Didn't notice the Bourbon or Milk!

Near black with a foamy beige head and a roasted malt aroma, has a slightly grainy mouthfeel and the taste is rich, roasted malt with some sweet coffee-like character, and a slightly bitter finish

(Cask at Rake, Borough, London, 26 July 2019) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and hazelnut. Malty, roasted taste with milky chocolate, nuts, hints of bourbon, vanilla and a mild raosty bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Highly drinkable and quite well balanced. Nice one.

On tap courtesy of Steve Matthews (I had a taster of his beer), whilst out with Peter Fowler, Poetic Licence, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, Saturday 2nd February 2019 also in the company of Peters daughter Claire. A jolly tasty stout, a touch dry, a little burnt wood, a little ash but there is also a sweetness. A touch of chocolate, really good.
