Opaque brown color with lasting tan head. Dark chocolate aroma. Taste is similar to a Porter, sweet malt and roasted malt bitterness. Ends with a mild coffee flavor.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a very faint and thin off-white head, barely coating the top. Aroma of roasted malt, hazelnuts, peanuts, mushrooms, sewage and a touch of grassy hops - very interesting in the nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich malty flavours up front with a good deal of caramelised sugars, some mushrooms and meatier elements with a nice complex hop finish showing some herbal notes but also a touch of a citrus finish. Aftertaste is rich and very malty - more of a baltic porter than anything else, especially at this ABV, but showing some hops, however the malt comes through strongest here. Overall, a nice rich beer with a lot of good tastes and complex malt flavours. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Alexandria, Virginia on 03-May-2016 for US$1,67 sampled at home in Washington on 07-July-2016.

Keg at Craft Conundrum, Charleston, 18/02/15. Light black with a decent tan covering. Nose is light roast, bitter hops, earthy, liquorice. Taste comprises more liquorice notes, spice, earthy, light pine. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Lower end of the CDA spectrum for me but drinkable none the less.

Draft at Lost Dog Dunn Loring. Poured a pitch black, like oil with a small but dense brown head. Aroma was dark, chocolate and roasted malt, touch of pine and hops. Flavor had a nice balanced malt to hop character, something missing in a lot of black IPA beers, as the bitterness is pretty well balanced out in this. Alcohol is masked almost entirely in this one, no boozy notes at all.

22oz bottle pours a hazy, mahogany black with some thin, beige head. Nose of bread crust, pine, vegetal, toast, soap. Flavor is roasty, toasted bread, a little coffee, light black pepper. Roasty finish.

Bottle shared at Sander’s in NYC. Pours deep brown with a creamy beige head. Rich dark malt nose, lots of burnt marshmallows. Medium sweet flavor, more burnt marshmallows, strong roast, torched wood, chocolate. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Well roasted malt finish, some milky coffee, roasted marshmallows, milk chocolate. Pretty damn tasty.

Mama Joy’s, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, and a bit of hops. Taste is not out there with sharp contrasts like many black IPAs have. Rather, this is a somewhat hoppy stout type beer. Alcohol is very well covered. Smooth.
