Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 1/11/13, Barley Wine #75
Aroma: The nose is a combination of oak/vanilla over some more subtle fruity sweetness
Appearance: Pours a clear orange color with a large frothy foam of off-white head that leaves heavy lace
Flavor: There's some fruity sweetness and some hops, but they are both overpowered by the oak
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it has a clean feel, soft carbonation, and some boozy heat
Overall Impression: There are oaked beers where it really enhances the flavors, and there are oaked beers where it dominates everything else and detracts from the beer, and unfortunately, this one is the later. If the oak was a little more in check I think this had a chance to be a really good beer.

Pours clear gold under a sticky mostly white head. Light malt aroma. Lightly sweet, no real hop presence. Not really what I call a Barleywine but maybe some kind of strong ale. But I really can’t sense the alcohol so it is very well hidden. Nice job; interesting beer.

Draft at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Clear golden orange body, medium tight clumping off-white head. Hoppy nose with bitter citrus rind and alcohol notes. Hot body with citrus rind, floral notes, perfume, and bready toffee finishing with white grape, bubblegum, and tannins. Buttery oak develops with warmth. Astringent.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy copper with a small off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is grapefruit and honey. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet fruit and sugary finish. Easy to drink hiding alcohol well, a good barleywine from Sam Adams.

22 oz. bottle. Batch #2. Snifter showed a transparent gold with amber like hue. Nice retention. Nose of yeast, grapefruit-like hops and a touch of wood. Taste is very much the same with a strong presence of alcohol toward the finish. Some light caramel sweetness. The flavors are nice, just over powered slightly by the ABV. A very nice small batch. I will let one sit in my basement to compare in a year.
