Small - Stout

Bottle at the pre Bamberg tune up in the Sham, huge thanks to Kenny for another Kernel whale, 23/01/14. Hazed dark mahogony brown with a moderate light tan covering. Nose is light roast, earthy cocoa, toffee. Taste comprises dark toffee, dark chocolate, earthy, light roast. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying closure. Ok stout.

Bottle(@ The Bottle Shop, Kenterbury): Literally black with a smaller, but stable, tanned head, leathery to dark-fruity nose with distinctive chocolatey traces and a discreet sourness; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied; lingering solid sweet-bitter finish, presenting leather, dried fruits and cacao. Bottle as my 100th Kernel rating! It pours jet black, with a decent tan head. The nose is varnish, chocolate, cherry, prune, coffee and roasted malt. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, meat, liquorice, bitter chocolate, earth, alcohol warmth, wood and burnt malt, with long dry finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Not quite as complex as it’s bigger brother. A very drinkable and flavoursome brew.

Bottle from the brewery drunk at home. Very dark brown near black beer. Thin lasting dark beige head. Powdery choc coffee aroma. Smooth in mouth mind and a decent level of sting on the finish. A strange old stout. Just a touch powdery in terms of the flavours maybe but what do I know?

Bottle 330ml. @ home.Clear dark black brown colour with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coffee, cacao, mokka. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, chocolate - cacao, dark chocolate, coal - coke, dusty. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Opaque black - brown beer, good tan head. Dry crisp palate. Mild minerals. A brief lacto note and then roasted malt, not too heavy. Coffee. A little dark chocolate. Some nice orangey hops underneath. Dry finish. Nicely joined up and not bad at all considering it’s original name was going to be ’Small Beer, Thin, Dry and Astringent’. Definitely a porter though ....

Bottle at home in London. Pours dark brown with a medium, foamy beige head. Aroma holds lovely, dry baking cocoa, scorched and dusty earth, dark malts, light peat and roast. Light to medium sweet, quite tangy, some dry chocolate, light grass, light roast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate roast finish, baking cocoa, earthy bitterness. Seems slightly light in body and character compared to other Kernel beers, but this one does have the immense drinkability of other Kernel offerings. Overall a very decent brew.

Bottled. Black colour, mediumsized brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some liquorice, mild alcohol as well as some mild ashy notes. Flavour is liquorice, ashes, roasted malts, quite a sting of alcohol as well as some mild wooden notes. Aftertaste is quite much like salted liquorice.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt and chocolate.
