Brewed in the tradition of English-style barley wines, Cereal Killer offers an explosion of full-bodied, liquid goodness. Robust malty flavors converge with caramel, toffee, molasses and dark fruit notes to produce a remarkably complex and palate-pleasing beer. Its intense malt character is complemented by a subtle citrus finish from the Crystal hops. With cellar-aging, Cereal Killer’s
flavor evolves further, developing a sherry-like aroma and flavor similar to a cask-aged port. Winner of the Silver Medal for Barley Wine Style Ale at
the 2007 GABF.

Bottle sampled at a tasting. 2008 vintage. From notes. Dark fruits, caramel, a hint of chocolate and vanilla. Boozy, but this is the perfect amount of age on this bad boy. Awesome.

Bottle. Ruddy orange-brown body, thin dense cream head. Sharp, burnt, sugary nose with alcohol notes. Leathery body dominated by brown sugar and caramel, in addition to toast, alcohol, and light rubbery phenols that annoy the palate.
Earlier Rating: 11/19/2006 Total Score: 3.5
Murky reddish-brown body, medium buff head. Sweet toasty, caramely aroma, with dark candied fruit and sharp alcohol notes. Sweet body, caramely, even a touch leathery. Dark fruits (primarily grape) develop as the beer warms. Noticeable warming alcohol. A solid barleywine, certainly not among the better examples of the style, but fairly complex.

22 ounce bottle into snifter; 3 year cellar aged version released this year, making it a 2010 vintage. Pours lightly hazy dark ruby red color with a small dense cream colored head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big raisin, fig, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, sherry, brown sugar, light chocolate, light pepper, and earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt/fruity notes; very sweet, but not offensively so. Taste of raisin, fig, apple, caramel, molasses, toast, sherry, brown sugar, light chocolate, light pepper, and earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, toast, brown sugar, sherry, light chocolate, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very good balance and complexity of malt and fruity notes; with no cloying sweetness present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice English Barleywine. All around nice balance and complexity of malt and fruity flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

12oz bottle came as an extra from Suchy. Thanks! Pours a transparent copper amber with some clumpy, slightly off white head. Nose is malty, cooked corn, brown sugar, caramel, some ripe pear, orange zest. Flavor is well balanced, caramel, cracker, biscuit, brown sugar, grapefruit rind, thick pine tar, birch sap. Full, sticky, bitter finish. Classic barleywine.

2011 bottle poured to snifter. Hazy red color with slight head. Fruity nose; a bit too much sherry on the palate for my taste. Very smooth and mild without any booziness of a 10 percent ABV.

Bottle @ Steve’s Foco. Picked up in KC, possibly by jcnielsen. Thanks, possibly. 2009 vintage. Hazy dark brown appearance with a small brown head. Somewhat oxidized, a bit sugary, brown sugar, light cardboard, a bit fruity aroma. Somewhat strong, moderately boozy, brown sugar, toffee, dark fruity flavor with some booze on the finish. (3.5) Tried against the 2010 vintage thanks to Steve. Sweeter in the nose than the 2009. Flavor is a bit more caramel, toffee taste. Not my favorite beer, a little boozy but drinkable. (3.5)

Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with a light tan head that diminishes quickly leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Thin mouthfeel with a bready malt and sweet roast with dark fruits and raisin flavors. Alcohol is hidden well, a very good barley wine from Arcadia.
