Original Sin was born out of the NYC experience. The founders, all NYC’ers, came to see the need for a superior cider, a cider that was clean and complex with a noticeable bite. The quest to create the perfect recipe encompassed both day and night. Day was spent in upstate in a winery, tasting, testing and mixing. Nights were spent in NYC bars, getting feedback from bar owners and patrons. The result, Original Sin Hard Cider was released to immediate acclaim from sources as diverse as the The New York Times, Paper Magazine, and Market Watch.

Bottle. Interesting to note that the cider and perry I am trying side by side are bottled at different places (FL and CA respectively). Clear yellow to green pour, no head. The color of very dehydrated urine. Not much visible carbonation. Nose of light sulfur and muted apples. Light smokiness (phenolic). Taste is a bit on the sweet side but better than 95% of commercial ciders sold in six packs. Doesn’t seem very back sweetened at all (THANK GOD!). Candied apple, dryness, medium to light bubbles, very mild acidity. Pretty clean, albeit boring. Glad to see a mass produced honest cider!

Sampled on draft at the World Beer Festival Richmond, 6/12/10. Pours a clear pale yellow color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet and slightly grainy apples. The taste is fairly strongly tart apple notes with a sweet finish. Medium bodied. Quite a bit nicer than I was expecting.

Night cap. What a crappy nightcap. I faintly remember not thinking this was total shit a couple years back when I needed something besides Double Bastard & Corona to appease the guests at our family Super Bowl party. Pint glass pour. Seltzer fizz yields no head. Gold-plated color. Smells of mushy pears, banana, & some not so nice plastic phenols, almost turning wheat-ish. Though it is still a watered down concentrate, it’s not as thin as most 6-pack stuff. Golden Delicious though, probably not. Stiff carbonation. Store brand apple juice. Added malic acid even thought the label doesn’t state it. Some boxed juice qualities. Sulfites are obvious. Alcohol is negligible. Tastes like cheap & sweet, watered down Asti Spumante, though it has moderate tartness. Brewed in Florida...

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Pours pale gold with a white head that doesn’t last. Aroma of tart apple. Taste is tart/sour green apple. Not really dry. Not sweet. Leaves an astringent apple skin impression. Thinking man’s cider. A good drink.

bottle - Pours very pale yellow. It has a mild aroma of green apples. The flavor is light apple that’s a touch tart. Really everything about this one is light. It’s not bad, but just doesn’t have much going for it either.

Short stubby bottle with a twist off cap. Nearly as clear as water but it does have a very slight yellow hue to it. Mild apples in the aroma. Not too sweet nor tart on the taste buds. Easy going and it leaves a slightly dull aftertaste on the back of the palate. At times it seems to almost have a vinous character about it. Not bad, could easily drink a few of these. 6% is not that prevalent in this drink, hides it rather well.

Sampler at Cardinal Liquors, Frankfort. The pourer kept describing this as a "champagne" cider. And actually he’s not too far off the mark (though I doubt it was actually bottle a la champaignoise). A light straw cider color. Smell is a little bit like a white Andre. A sweet fizzy taste, not too sweet, balanced by just a little apple tart.

Extremely baby foodish aroma of pears and apples. Color is almost as clear and colorless as water, with a slight lime green tint. Clean cider taste, good alcohol masking.
