KINGPIN is a full-flavored, red-colored ale that uses a rarely-grown Willamette Valley Hop varietal known as Liberty Hops from fourth generation hop farmer John Annen of Annen Bros. Farm in Silverton, Oregon. Jeff and his team of brewers also used rye and caramel malt leading to a unique flavor profile; triple-hopped for bitter aroma and a unique dry-hopped character.

This one’s a conundrum. Looks great, smells funky (somebody mentioned ethanol), taste is both strong malt and hops. The smell is a little off-putting, and the taste is a little getting used to, but I can sense what the brewer was trying to do. Might be better on tap...decent

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A big dry dusty caramel malt nose. The flavor is very dry, fruity berries, some dusty caramel and malt, light bitter finish.

On tap at Skinny Slims. Pours a clear deep amber red with a creamy tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of grassiness with a backing sweet grain and hint of caramel. Flavor is similar with a nice grassy note supported by sweet grains and a touch of cookie.

Clear reddish amber with a light beige head that fades to a coat but then lasts. Aroma of toffee, berries, pepper, some vague citrus notes. Sweet with bitterness gradually emerging. Some dark fruit with the caramel, some citrus and rye-associated spiciness at the fairly bitter finish. OK, but there’s little depth or intensity for a strongish beer.

Pours copper with a large lasting head.Nose shows caramel, toffee, bready malt and nutty notes. Also some soft spicy hops. Some caramel transfers through as a flavour along with some bready notes. A fairly sharp, metallic finish follows from the combined alcohol and bitterness.Body feels overly syrupy.
