Dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros whiskey barrels

A demonic dark sour, Nightmare on Brett takes on many facets during its transformation to the sour side. Initially aged in large oak foeders with our mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria, this beer is then transferred to bourbon and whiskey barrels. The various spirit barrels bring on a new life to this beer as it conditions for months, while obtaining additional bourbon and whiskey characteristics. Dominated by dark fruit aromas and flavors, the underlying cacao notes meld with an acidic tart berry finish. With each batch release being a unique blend of barrels, the multiple variations of Nightmare on Brett released throughout the year prove that with creativity and experimentation, anything is possible.

On tap @ Ghetto Something. Aroma of brett, roasted malt, chocolate and wood. Pours pitch black color with thin creamy light brown head and fair lacing. Taste starts with moderate sweet roasted malt, chocolate and brett, following is vinous, berry-like and woody, mouthfeel is smooth, while finish is tart. Full body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate. Sourman & Darkfunkel…

Tasting at Phill's, bottle
(some details got lost) Moderate acidity, some balsamic, but it's weaker than expected.

Bottle at Au Trappiste, Bern, 11/2014 batch 3
Dark brown color, almost black, oily. Very interesting aroma, dark chocolate, wine and sour elements. Good, but it’s too sour, the body is too thin, there is no notable malt, at least it has a light balsamic note.
A bit pretentious, and it’s not a high achiever.

750mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany brown with a small beige/tan head. Aroma brings out lots of whiskey barrels, sour dark red fruits, oak, and a little balsamic. Flavour is quite complex, with sour dark fruits, bretty funk, oak, whiskey barrels, and booze. This works surprisingly well. Funk, earthy, fruity, boozy and accentuated nicely by the whiskey. Very nicely done.

375ml bottle, sent from yourilevesque (thanks a lot, Youri), pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out fresh raspberries upfront, followed by complex whiskey barrels, and tart dark fruits. Flavour is complex, with loads of raspberries and whiskey barrels upfront, with intensely puckering tartness and light acidity. Woody, tart and acidic finish. Excellent.

Bottle at home. Two year old. Has a dark brown colour with a small light brown head that fades fast. Aroma of oak, sweet cherries, tobacco, licorice, coca cola, dates and balsamico vinegar. Flavour of oak, vinegar, red currants, grape skins, plums and some brown sugar in the background. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, medium to full-bodied and a soft bitterness. Nice and rich aroma. Is quite sour in the mouth and the flavour feels a bit unbalanced.

Bottle. One year old. Has a deep brown colour with a beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, oak, vinegar, raisins, balsamico, black currants and some coffee in the background. Flavour of vinegar, oak, black currants and leather. Has slick mouth feel, medium body and a light bitterness. Sour and nice. The aroma promised a bit more complexity than the flavour gave.

Well stored bottle. Dark brown, almost black body under a dense beige head. Aroma of dark malt, dark fruit, wood and funk. Taste is really smooth with a fine balance between sweet, soft roasted dark malt and funky sourness, lots of dark, ripe fruit, some wood and hint of chocolate. Full bodied and long lasting aftertaste. Delicious.
