Bottle from Cornelius. Brown body with ruby highlights and a beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma of brambles, blueberry jam, mashed strawberry and treacle. The flavour is very fruity and tart - so much so that I’m surprised there’s no fruit used in the brew. Notes of blackcurrant, cranberry, prunes and and a faint hint of rum. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. A very unusual beer - almost like cranberry juice mixed with a Porter. It’s a bit sweet for my taste, but it’s certainly unique.

Bottle. Like the Brigadier, I suffered a major loss of beer after an explosive opening. Despite having been stored in a dark and cool cupboard for four months after purchase, a third of the bottle’s contents gushed away down the sink. I was left with a sweet, near black stout with some chocolate character but not a great deal to show for 6% ABV. Disappointing.

Bottle from the Microbar, Manchester... I think...not too sure! Light gush with this one, black pour with a beige head. Chocolate ice cream and rum raisin aroma, most dessertesque. Flavours of dark chocolate, dark fruit and a little coffee. Malt laden finish. Not too bad.

Bottle enjoyed at The Inn Beer Shop, Southport. Very dark brown, with a tan head. Minimal carbonation, smooth and would liken to spiced Christmas Cake infused with chocolate. Not to everyone’s taste (the chap I was drinking with didn’t like it) but I did very much, so I got to finish his too...

Bottle at Leighton’s Beer, Bocce and Boozer tasting, thanks to the man himself. Gusher!! It pours deep brown, with a thick beige head. The nose is roasted malt, caramel, toffee, milk chocolate and a touch of spice. The taste is chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, oat, charcoal, toffee, charred wood and smoke, with a long dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent.

Bottle at the Beer, Bocce and Boozer Tasting, London. I brought this puppy. Pours clear, red-brown with a fine white cream. Soapy and roasty malt aroma with hints of cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor with dry, roasty cocoa, light burnt wood and ash. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Fairly dry and roasty to finish with notes of cocoa, dry wood, light earth. Pretty sweet to finish, too. Nice beer.

Bottle from Alesela
Cark ruby brown (does not look like a stout!)...rocky off white head...clear...good lacing
Aroma - Roasted malts...some smoke...yeasty...light coffee..toasted caramel malts
Taste - Roasted malts...very roasty..smoky notes...light coffrr...toasted wood..good flavour but not particularly complex
Palate - Medium carb...medium body...gentle...smooth
Finish - As main flavour...very long longering burnt roast and a bit smoky
Overall - This has the roast but less of the rich dark malt backbone which I like in a stout. It’s more of a roasty premium bitter/ old ale hybrid. An unusual one.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby. Brief head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel, coffee and raisins. Malty, fruity taste with coffee, raisins, prunes, dried fruit and a slightly bitter-sweet finish. Medium body, fairly sweet. Quite fruity and sweet for a stout, but interesting and quite nice.
