I’m sure I had this before somewhere but must have confused it with its kriek variant so properly rating now from a 33 cl steini bottle bought at Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Thick, egg-white, very dense and stable head leaving behind an intricate pattern of irregular cobweb-like lacing, over an initially clear, amberish ruddy, almost ’autumny’ coloured beer, misty and a bit more brownish with sediment. Aroma of old red apples, blue plum, medium dry sherry, sweet grapes, passion fruit, raspberry yoghurt, hazelnuts, vanilla-like oak shavings (actually used here, quote the brewer who told me this a few weeks ago), brown sugar, bread crumbs, dusty dry earth, stewed rhubarb, cranberries, fermenting gooseberries. Estery, very fruity onset, lots of redcurrant and unripe nectarine tartness mixed with a soft peachy and red apple-like sweetishness, sharp carbonation (a bit much for the style actually) with minerally effects but still rather lean, supple mouthfeel; the fruity sourness dries the palate till the end but in a relatively gentle manner, with a rounded, bready and softly caramelly malt sweetish background in the middle, while a soft but fairly ’deep’ yoghurty, lactic sourness develops. Drying finish due to the berry and stonefruit acidity as well as that yoghurty lactic tartness, aided by an earthy, late but effective and well-positioned, ’dim’ but clearly recognisable hop bitter factor as well as woody tannins. This earthy hop bitterness lingers on the root of the tongue afterwards, a bit more so than would usually be the case in a Flemish red. Other than that: a basic but well-performing, completely correct and accessible example of this style; basic since the added oak shavings can never provide the same depth as prolonged barrel aging and the fermentation agents are clearly cultivated and in that sense rather ’clean’ and straightforward, but correct since it delivers all the flavours one would expect from a Rodenbach-inspired ’oud bruin’. Easygoing stepping stone towards the deeper, more complex and refined representatives of this old style. Nice enough like its Kriek version, cheers Danny!

Bottle, 5%. Very acidic aroma, almost hurts my nose. Vinegary, sharp and nice. Clear dark amber colour. Small stable whitish head. The flavour is acidic and fruity. Not as acidic as the aroma. Fruity flavour also, dark berries, with some vanilla. Woody finish. The mouthfeel is a little thin, but the flavour is very good.

Bottle. Pours nearly clear rich amber with stable, creamy off-white head. Vinous aroma with notes of yeast and malty touches. Vinous flavour with malty and spicy notes and bitter touches of hops. Vinous aftertaste. Decent, although a little watery.

Bottle. A- Subtle vinegar, cherry juice. A- Red brown color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Cherry juice, mild tartness. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Pretty light on the aroma and flavor. Doesn’t have the funk which I appreciate but also lacks much flavor or complexity. Decent.
