Bottle. Really boring bitter. Sure there is malt, but there is no chocolate, no hops, no nuttiness... nothing at all. Plain. It’s not even bad...

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Copper with a dense creame head; slightly sulphurous aroma with some orange juice; smooth and creamy with citrus notes and a dry, biscuity body; gentle leafy hops give a sustained bitter finish. A very pleasant bitter.

Cask-conditioned at the Knights Templar JDW, London. dark amber in colour with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of doughy malts, with a hint of roastiness, and some earthy hops. Big malt flavours, balanced by some leafy hops and a big, bitter finish. Another enjoyable beer from Dark Star.

Cask conditioned at The Castle, Furnival St., London
Hazy mahogay color. Good caramel and very light chocolate malt, the body is weaker than expected, the final too, and the bitterness barely right; in the final the chocolate malt shows a bit more. Pleasant but not special.

Cask, gravity at Merton Winter Beer Festival Feb 08 Poured dark amber with the merest hint of a haze, some smokiness on the nose, and then an initial smokiness in the mouth I was rather surprised by the smokiness and I wonder if the recipe has been tweaked at all recently? This had a nice bitterness about it and certainly was another very good beer from Dark Star although I will say it isn’t quite up there with some of it’s stablemate’s.

(Cask at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Nut brown colour with amber notes, foamy off-white head. Fruity nose with notes of raisins, prunes, hints of coffee and lots of earthy hops. Malty taste with dark fruit, prunes, hints of coffee and generous amounts of earthy, citrussy hops in the finish. Very tasty, very nice bitter with lots of hop caharacter (as usual from Dark Star).

Cask condtioned handpull Evening Star, Brighton. Chestnut colour with thin beige head. Malty in mouth. Herby dry malt aroma. Good dry malt in mouth. Slightly astringent hop finish. Great in mouth, the malt is great, lovely flavour and then arresting hop finish. I really rather like it.
