Cask at GBBF 2015. It pours dark brown with a tiny, bubbly beige head. The nose is toasty, earthy, dirt, twig, burnt cake, mild berry and a hint of sulphur. The taste is toasty, earthy, wood, leather, mild acidity, cocoa, charred wood and filter coffee with a short, earthy finish. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. A simple toasty mild offering. Not much to it, but not bad either.

Cask at GBBF 2015, day 1 - London. Pours clear, deep brown with a faint creamy head. The nose holds well toasted bread, light chocolate and dried fruits. Light sweet flavor with nice burnt toast, hints of leather, dried berries, chocolate. Light bodied with fine carbonation; great condition. Very well balanced on the finish, with notes of roasted malts, dry cocoa, leathery fruits. An outstanding mild. Hits all the right notes.

GBBF Day 2. Cask. Clear deep amber - brown beer, a few pale tan bubbles. Palate is light and semi dry, low carbonation. Dry thin dark malts, mild tang. Whisper of sulphur. Trace of marmalade. Dry chocolate. Dry finish. Just another thin dull mild.

At GBBF. Dark mild with loose, off-white to pale greyish head; deep, dark burgundy colour, almost blackish in the middle. Aroma of smoked meat, caramel, raisins, bayleaf, brown bread, some tobacco. Clean, light fruity taste, very smooth and soft, thin, bit oily mouthfeel, nutty maltiness, toasted, some ’clean’, nice smokiness in the end with a soft, earthy hop bitterness but finishing in juicy maltiness nonetheless. Very decent example of these new smoky dark milds which I think are keeping the style alive.

Gravity cask at the Liberty Belle, Ely. Very dark brown, opaque. No head or obvious carbonation. Nutella, coffee, a bit of a grassy/earthy note in the bouquet. Taste is slightly less inspiring but solid enough: richly sweet with only a tinge of bitter chocolate. The texture is very thin, which only seems to augment the flatness of the body. Decent, but I would have appreciated a bit more zing.
