The incredibly subtle, elegant and mellow flavour of Oude Geuze VAT 91 has its origins in foeder No. 91, which used to be a calvados vat in Normandy. Today this foeder is creating excellent, mild Lambic beer, perfect for Oude Geuze. VAT 91 is soft, rounded, full-bodied, complex and balanced.

Bottle, 75cl corked, kindly shared by Meilby. A faintly hazy orange colored beer with some off-white bubbles on top. The aroma is quite funky, leathery and fruity, with some lemon notes, wood and some orange hints. It's full to medium bodied, dry, almost tart, soft and nicely carbonated, with lots of funky flavors. Lemon, horseblanket, wood, leather and barnyard. Lasting finish. A very pleasant geuze indeed. Complex and tasteful. 181231

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color Lambic with a large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of funky barnyard notes with some light tart notes is quite enticing. Taste is a good mix of funky barnyard notes with some tart notes and some oak notes with very subtle green apple acidic notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Nice mix of complexity and drinkability but I must admit Calvados notes are hard to distinguish.

Flaska från mixpack, från SB. Stiltypisk lambic, med kolsyra. Stall, citrus, fat, syrliga äpplen, druvor. Ganska rund syra, lite stram beska, bra balans och rena smaker. Mycket gott.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/19/2016. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, melon, red/green apple, brandy, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, wet wood, wheat, cracker, light oaken vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, calvados barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, melon, red/green apple, brandy, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, wet wood, wheat, cracker, light oaken vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast/oak tannin spiciness and light-moderate lactic tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, melon, red/green apple, brandy, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, grass, peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, wet wood, wheat, cracker, light oaken vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, calvados barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tart/spiciness balance; and zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Moderate increasing dryness from tart/spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/tannic, and fairly acidic/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is a fantastic gueuze! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast, calvados barrels, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly acidic/spicy/tannic/drying finish, not overly lactic. Classic barnyard Gueuze Brett/Bacteria funk profile; balanced pale/wheat malts against acidity, and nice calvados barrel presence/integration. Very similar to the other Vats as expected, but differences coming from the barrels used. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.
