As it matures in the bottle, St Cuthbert becomes drier, allowing bitterness and alcoholic strength to come to the fore. A heady floral aroma is immediately apparent on pouring. Peachy fruit notes and a moderate bitterness linger on the palate long after enjoying a draught.

(Bottle, 0.5 l, at Black Door, 20120831) The beer poured deep golden and clear. Its head was medium sized, white and long lasting. Aroma had grass, malts and alcohol. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grain, malts, grass, alcohol and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy, boozy and bitter. Not a very pleasant brew but had nice grain flavour and decent grassy hop aroma.

50cl from Beer City, BB 04-2014.

Cask at GBBF. Clear gold beer. Light dry palate. Very low carbonation. Sweet malt reasonably well balanced with some light hop. Decent flavour but ultimately flat and thus a bit boring.

500ml bottle. Pours a deep gold with a large head. Aroma is sherbet lemon, orange and bready malt underneath. Taste has some straw malt. Bitter marmalade. Sharp bitter finish. Lemon on the aftertaste. Prickly carbonation.

Bottle from Nina’s Mini Mart, Edinburgh
Orange amber...clear...frothy white head...dissipates to thin layer..some lacing
Aroma - light aroma of citrus orange zest...some orange...sweet light caramel malts.....slight alcohol tang on nose.
Taste - Orange citrus...orange zest..bit of peach...bitter orange marmalade..juicy sweet caramel malts...slight toffee...touch of toasted malt...background light bitter zesty hops...alcohol noticeable but reasonably masked....not a bitter IPA more emphasis on fruits..
Palate - medium carb from bottle...medium body...bit oily sticky texture. Finish as main flavour with increased zesty orange bitterness in the moderate linger....some warming alcohol
Overall - I would give it a good swirl to get rid of some of the carbonation. A nice quite orangey IPA with a dask of marmalade and a light bitter orange zest finish.

Bottle,11C. Almost clear orange with a white head. Aroma of orange blossoms, earth, caramel, lemon, alcohol. Slightly sweet with biscuit, caramel, peach, then quite earthy bitterness and a dry finish with some wood notes. A little too much carbonation, but perhaps that’s part of the Belgian influence on what remains a very English beer. Lots to like, but the alcohol sticks out too much.
