Brewed once a year this classic strong golden beer has a long maturation period to give a smooth and warming character.

A delightful sipping beer. Rich fruit flavours with marzipan, herbal hoppiness and Cognac overtones finishing with a warming alcohol essence. The residual sweetness is balanced by large amounts of best English Goldings hops.

Bottle ordered from Beer GB. Aroma had sour fruit, nuts and glue. Clear copper gold. Thin bubbly translucent white head primarily sticks to the rim. Sweet and sour jammy fruit. Boozy bitter edge. Light-medium bodied. Slick-oily. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long somewhat astringent finish. A polite, restrained Barley Wine. Nice but not quite bathing in Christmas.

250ml bottle from Tebay services, drunk at home. Pours clear copper, thin receding white head. Aroma is a little cobwebby with some caramel. Taste is slick, with honey, caramel, cobwebs and a warming alcohol presence. A bit harsh.

Bottle from the Black Bull. Appearance - amber red with a lovely lacy head. Nose -honey and wholemeal bread. Taste - honey going into marmalade. Palate - medium to full bodied with a big tangy texture and a long balanced finish. Overall - not the best barley wine but a decent impression.

Flaske 0,275l spandert av Rune og delt med ham under bonusseanse i WC-veien 30 Apr 13. Gyldenbrun. Høyt luftig skum som varer. Forsiktig krydderaroma. Smaken veldig søt. Litt mandler. Holder seg veldig søt. Litt tørr i avslutninga. Preg av sherry.

Bottle courtesy of Geraint & Helen (next door neighbours) consumed at home Wednesday 11th December 2013 Pours copper in colour with hardly a bubble noticed. Clarity is pretty good, consistency is watery syrup, actually its not so thick but it is thicker than your average beer. Fruity and a little sweet with a little sourness creeping in. To be fair this isn’t your heavy cloying, massively sweet Barley Wine as it certainly has its own character but sipping again it is sweet with alcohol soaked rasins and other dried fruit dancing on the tongue. A good beer would have liked a little carbonation though. A6 A3 T7 P4 Ov14 3.4

Nose is brandy, apple, toffee, lots of brown sugar. Really delightful. Taste is toffee apples, spun sugar, touch of brandy slight hoppiness. Notes sticky fruits, vinous notes, slight lactose. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Very sweet, but a good addition to the cellar.

275ml bottle bought at Microbar in Manchester last summer. Shared with Finn. Clear golden coloured body. Low, but lasting, white head. Fragile lacing down the glass. Aroma of dried fruits and herbal hops. Ripe fruity taste added by dusty hops and a bite of marzipan. The ending is on the sweet side of bittersweet fruits. Good drinking in small amounts (Tromsø, 30.04.2013).

On gravity at Bristol beer festival, 16/3/3013. Deep gold with a slight white head. Extremely sweet and syrupy, with some burning alcohol, candied fruits and a touch of bitterness in the finish. Really not my type of beer.
