This copper-coloured ale is smooth and fruity, with a definite caramel character and a firm hop balance to offset the sweet notes.

Cask-conditioned at the Robert Fitzharding (JDW), Bedminster, Bristol 28/9/2015. Reddish amber with a frothy, off-white, head. Sweet beer, with some caramel, red berries and a moderately bitter finish, with a hint of Wadworths ’house’ character. Fine.

Cask @ Seven Stars, Manchester. Copper-gold with a creamy head. Has a healthy bodied crisp malty-sweet character with regular malts in its nose. There’s a few hops involved too, and has a very mild berry-fruitiness.

Handpull cask at the College Arms, Peterborough. Red-brown, clear and pretty much flat. Sulphurous aroma with hints of redcurrant. The fruity sweetness is cut by a bitter astringency, which dominates the finish. Decent enough body. Not the greatest beer but certainly drinkable.

Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading. Copper indeed, with a thin white head. Light caramel. Light fruit. Light malt. Light minerals. Light dryness in the finish. Light all round in fact. But it’s OK, it grew on me and I quite enjoyed it by the end.

Cask at the Bear (JDW), Maidenhead. Amber with a tight cream head leaving lots of lacing on the glass; bready aroma; soft creamy texture, with a sweet amber malt taste; lightly bitter with a biscuity finish. Satisfying, and just what I’d expect from an Irish Ale.
