Belgian-Style Ale Brewed with Spices, Wheat and Oats

Orchard White is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned Belgian-style witbier. This hazy, straw yellow beer is spiced with coriander, citrus peel and lavender added to the boil and whirlpool. A spicy, fruity yeast strain is used to add complexity, and rolled oats are added for a silky texture.

Admin Note: This is retired and has moved over the Bruery Terreux line starting in 2015.

Notes from March 2009 3.28/5 rDev -15.7% look: 3.5 - smell: 3 - taste: 3.5 - feel: 3.5 - overall: 3 Growler via Whole Foods Bowery. The Golden Carolus chalice moves into the lead-off position this weekend. A little sturdier then my trusty Ommegang glass & just as pretty. College basketball surely will take its toll, & want to be ready. :P Pours out a ginger ale gold with moderately plentiful, yet thin off-white head. Mesh screen transparency, but not far off from looking filtered. Smell is a potpourri of dried lavender, roses, ginger, baby powder, rosemary & apricots for perceived tartness. Curious at first, but overpowering & somewhat offensive as I continue. Both positive & negative viewpoints result in lots of fence for me to sit on. First impressions with the taste, actually the mouthfeel, is that this is much less carbonated then what has been stirring in bottles. The bubbles are a little bigger here, but add harshness & bite exemplified by something like Sierra Nevada PA. Via bottle you'd have excessive, but tight bubbles. Taste-wise: dusty wheat bread, roses, big dry cider similarities(minus any sweetness), touch of oj, a necessary amount of clove, with a minor leafy green bitterness at the tail end. It starts to fall apart once it warms a touch, but the floral aspect of it stick around. The alcohol gets noticed rather harshly here too. Drink it cold, drink it with an agenda. I love anything without much to do with hops, but like a sloppy new-age gruit, I think it wears on you.

Hazy pale gold beer, big white head. Light crispy palate, semi dry. Aromatic beer, seamlessly blended mild citrus, minty spice and floral sweetness. Finishes dry . Nice beer but perhaps better drunk on a summers day rather than a freezing cold night!

Refrigerated 75 cl poured into a weizen glass. Pours clear golden with big fluffy white head. Little lacing, light body, well carbonated, and lavender aroma. Taste is tart coriander, some citrus, and finishes with some lavender. This is a pretty good beer until the lavender finish.
