Export Stout. Brewed in collaboration with Epochal Barrel Fermented Ales. This is a recreation of a beer that found in bottles retrieved from a shipwrecked vessel Wallachia, which sank after a collision in the Clyde Estuary in 1895. The beer itself was a strong export stout from the McEwan’s brewery in Glasgow, destined for the West Indies.

Our version utilises ingredients typical for the period, including heritage Chevallier base malt, amber, brown and black roasted malts and No.2 Invert sugar. We have released this version of the beer as close to what we think the original would have tasted like young, with another portion aging in barrels with mixed cultures harvested from the original bottles, for release once the beer is aged for one year.

Bottle. Color: Black, long lasting brown head. Aroma: Molasses, sweetish, roasted malt, some leather and blueberry and hints of coffee. Taste: Molasses, roasted malt, leathery notes, some chocolate and fruity blueberry and hints of coffee. Full, bit creamy body. Below average carbonation. Over moderate to medium sweet, light sourness, moderate to over moderate bitterness. Nice one.

Can from the interweb. It pours oily jet black with a dark brown head which dissipates. The aroma is dark roasted malt, charred, burnt toast, rich chocolate vibes, gateaux, praline, nuttiness, chocolate covered coffee beans and salted caramel. The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, rich roasted malt, burnt toast, coffee, cacao nibs, rich chocolate character, gateaux, salted caramel, umami, pipe tobacco, treacle, some spice and light alcohol presence with a smooth, roasty finish. Fulsome body, moderate, foamy carbonation. Pretty robust and flavourful.

Can via the online shop. Nearly black. Slim super sticky lasting tan swede. Looks boss. Nose has vinous tangy coffee malt. Dark chocolate caramel. Taste is similarly tangy and vinous. Plenty bitter. Drinks easy throughout. Tangy vibe keeps going. Big bitterness to finish. Tasty no nonsense adjunct free boss bev.

440mL can, pours jet black with a medium brown bead. Nose is full of deep dark roasted malt, some dusty dry cocoa powder, a touch of coffee, and some wood. Flavour is bold, with massive roasted malt, wood, a touch of coffee and cocoa, finishing dry and very roasty. Almost reminds me of Yeti with its woody roast and dryness.

Draught Dark tan head, not very huge; black beer with a brown-red rim. Slightly salty/mineral nose. Further coffee, roasted nuts, sweetish meatroast. Very dry, coffee-like flavour. Dry, almost ashy, smoked, roasty flavours; almost all sugars gone. Medium bodied, not thin but thinnish for its ABV. Very soft carbonation. Nowhere bad, but one might expect slighty more fireworks from 8%.
