A dark, malty, spicy seasonal ale. Brewed with black, pale chocolate, and crystal malts and English hops. In keeping with the Yule season, this beer is spiced with mistletoe, ivy, and poinsettia. Just joking about the spicing; so you can put away the stomach pump. Actually spiced with coriander and juniper berries. Thanks to Glenn and Davy at Alvinne brewery for their advice about juniper berries.

Cask at the Hope & Champion, Beaconsfield. Poured a clear medium brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is yeast, light sweet malt. The flavour is moderate to light bitter with a yeasty, light chocolate, light medicinal hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Not particularly well kept and not particularly enjoyable.

Cask at the Prince Arthur (JDW), Fleet. Deep chestnut with a thick beige head; spicy malt aroma; toffee taste with some gentle winter spices; and a twiggy bitterness. A pleasant but straightforward winter ale.

Cask @ New Oxford, Salford. Dark chestnut brown with a small head. Has light but tasty winter fruit notes with some a hint of caramel, and a healthy sweetness.

Cask at the Fox, Twickenham, 11/01/14. Very lightly hazed amber/copper with a good sized off white cap that retains well. Nose is bready malt, pepper, clove, light spice, biscuit crumble, musty tones. Taste comprises bready malt, light toffee, orchard fruits, earthy, pepper, pinch of spice. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light bitter notes in the closure. Ok stuff, inoffensive, nothing I’d be rushing back to though.

Pigs Ear. Clear dark brown beer. Suddy pale tan head. Smooth light palate. Dry mild floral malt. Nice tangy tangerine. Dry finish. Not bad.

Dark red brown colour, small off-white head. Lovely nose, aroma of caramel, malts, roasted malts, toast, light spicy, light nuts, some sweetness. Light sweet flavour, rather thin body. Too thin for my liking. Finish light spicy, somewhat fruity. Not bad, but a bit lagging behind in flavour and body.

Cask Cola-coloured beer with B.C."H." Watercress, brown mushrooms. Strange nose, but good. Melanoidins, chocolate malt, wood, bit nutty. Light body, little slickness, very watery, and that for a X-mas ale. In itself, it’s OK. but I expect a bit more for celebrating - even in the UK.
