Bitch Creek ESB was first brewed in 2003, and perfectly balances big malt sweetness and robust hop flavor for a full-bodied mahogany ale. It has quickly become our best-selling beer, as well as our most-critically acclaimed, having won medals-including two golds— at four out of the past five Great American Beer Festivals.

XX Bitch Creek Double ESB is all that and more. We took the Bitch Creek recipe and doubled everything: double the malt, double the hops, twice the flavor.

750 ml bottle. Bottled 8/23/12. Pours murky brown with a medium dark beige head that collapses after a few minutes; leaves nice lace. Aroma is strong in caramel; there’s also burnt toast, floral notes. It’s very aromatic but it doesn’t smell like my cup of tea--smells like a malt bomb. Taste is sweet and roasty with some bitterness in the finish. Taste is somewhat similar to Arrogant Bastard and other beers of that ilk. I’m getting strong anise in the lingering finish. Alcohol presence is strong--tastes much stronger than 7.5%. Mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation soft to medium. It’s a respectable brew, but not really my thing.

Thanks to Norm for opening up this waxed swing top liter bottle that poured out deep amber in color with tan head. The aroma has a good load of roasted malts as well as a bit of pine like hops in the background. The taste is both rich and roasty and at the same time smooth and easy drinking somehow. In behind the various roasted malts is a pine hop sense in the background. Interesting brew that is big on roasted malts yet has the right level of malt sweetness and hops to make it insanely drinkable. Unexpectedly good.
