Citra hop flavor shines through in this expertly balanced IPA with just the right amount of bitterness. Showcasing local hops, Pike IPA blends citrus and tropical hop flavors with a clean, light malt character. Recently updated from the original 1990 recipe that helped shape North America’s devotion to hops, Pike IPA continues to be in a league of its own.

12oz bottle. Orange-tan color, filtered assumably. Hops and alcohol aroma. Lots of chewy hop character. Excellent WIPA. Orange nuances in there, as well as some fresh hop characteristics. Classic Seattle beer.

Bottle. Floral citrus hop aroma. Amber color with a white head that left light ring lace. Medium body with chewy carbonation. Flavor is roasted malt with lots of mixed hop. Citrus, floral, perhaps a little resin. Finish is quite dry and bitter. A good one.

It pours slightly hazy copper with off white head and decent lacing. The aroma is tart and bitter with tangerine, grapefruit rind, nectarine and raspberry tartness. Wow, the taste is different from a standard IPA. I taste tartness with sour edges. Almost seems like a Lambic. It is fruity, tart and sour but without any noticeable funk. I taste unripe tangerine, grapefruit, citrus rind tartness and tangy raspberries. It almost tastes as if something has gone wrong. There is a malty sweetness that keeps this beer from becoming overly tart and sour. Just too tart and sour for an IPA in my mind.

Draught pint at Redbones on 10/11/07
Moderately hazy, pale-golden colored IPA, with a large, foamy, white head that shows moderate retention, little/no lacing.
Straightforward C-hop nose is lightly fruity, quite bitter and shows off mostly oranges and grapefruits. Some strong dextrine notes give the effect of a very supportive body, but without gobs of sweetness. Bitterness waxes rather heavily towards the finish, and without much variation as the beer progresses. Medium strength of aroma, no flaws or alcohol noted.
Strongly bitter, and with low malt apparency. Just some basic cookie dough and honey sweetness, that softens the palate and prepares the palate for the heavy hand of hop bitterness. There are definitely some interesting, fruity notes (peaches, mangoes, nectarines), but there severely underrepresented on account of the massive citric bitterness/dominance by grapefruit. Not overly resinous, however, which allowed me to drink it down without too much of a problem. Soft, cakey, honey-vanilla sugars emerge with warming and breathing, adding more balance and helping to resucitate the palate, somewhat. Soft, supple mouthfeel, medium carbonation, no alcohol or flaws noted. A bit of yeast blandness (liquid seems more hazy than it should be), but no dirtiness is derived from it, fortunately.
I have a bottle, so I will be rerating it shortly....

A hazy golden amber ale with a thick creamy lacing off white head. Aroma is quite interesting although I suspect infection...flowery resinous hops with notes of Brett, catnip. In mouth, a good malt with very present hopping, but very herbal and wild, with lots of grapefruit, bitter, and a rich body. Interesting. Sherbrooke Liquors, Edmonton, early 2007.

On tap at Pike Pub, Seattle. Copper, beige head. Earthy hop grapefruit, cascadey, resinous. Reasonable in mouth. Intense IPA hop finish with more grapefruit. Very astringent. Good intensity. Malts disappear relatively quickly to leave astringent earthy hop finish. It’s fine if a little basic and simple

tap at the brewpub - Pours copper and has a mild hoppy aroma with some light flowery notes. The taste is led by the hops and includes some light citrus notes. The body is medium and the finish is dry. This is a pretty typical IPA.
