At Quintessence 2018 and also from bottle at Moeder Lambic Original. Light unclear yellow color with white head. Funky yeasty and malty aroma, wood, light alcohol, citrus and stone fruits, vinous. Sweet and light acidic taste. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.

Quintessence. Soft head, clear golden. Barrel, lower funk, less stables. Medium body, forward sourness, lively carbonation, quite straight. Good armagnac flavours. Lingering palate. Tasty!

(Bottle sample @ Quintessence 2018, Cantillon, May 1/18) Pours a slightly hazy medium gold with a small but persistent white head. Notes smooth and brightly fruity armagnac, navel orange, pit fruit, white grape, deep but balanced cellar funk, dry hay, orange peels, moderate wood, no real overt spirit blast like the 2012 bottle I tried a day earlier. Light sweet, moderately tart and lightly bitter, supremely well-integrated with a long finish. Medium bodied with soft mouth-filling effervescence. Just lovely, one of the best beers of the day, it's quite a different experience at this point than the 2012 cognac version but it's one that will appeal more to those who aren't brandy-heads.

75cl bouteille à Cantillon, pre-Quintessence day. Bottle# 5551.

Sampled at Quintessence 2018. Hazy golden pour with a white head. Notes of mouldy cellar, funk, light mineral, nice sharp armagnac, stinky old cheese. Overall quite nice, and seems to have excellent ageing potential.

The second version (but actually fourth batch in total if I'm correctly informed) of this geuze referring to the geographical position of the Cantillon brewery and museum, with lambic aged on armagnac barrels rather than the cognac barrels used for the first version I had years ago (before that immense Cantillon hype we're seeing today). Sampled at Cantillon's own premises during Quintessence 2018 and later at Moeder Lambic Fontainas. Off-white, medium size, thick but quickly dissipating head, warm hazy 'old gold' colour with peachy hue. Aroma of ripe gooseberries, sour apples, wet vanilla-ish oak wood, dust, damp hay, unsugared yoghurt, lemon rind, dried wormwood leaves, vague brandy-like touch - as subtle as I remember from the first version. Sour, tart onset as expected, crabapple and unripe stonefruit with a lemony edge, bitterish grape peel accent, fizzy cava-like carbonation; bready underground in the middle, buried under dry white wine and dusty old wood, lambic funkiness and eventually a complex, dry, funky, bit sweaty finish with a ton of lingering fruity esteriness but also a recognisable touch of 'general' brandy, though not necessarily recognisable as armagnac - in fact the combination with the sour apple-like properties of the lambic reminded me more of calvados. Equally beautiful and complex as the first, cognac version.

Clear golden colour, white head. Funky aroma, old hay, cognac (Armanac, I presume, but I don't have enough experience to keep the two apart), some citrus, white wine, apricot and orange rind. Light sour flavour, wood, lemon zest. Relatively bitter. Funky finish, wood, warm cognac notes and orange & lemon zest. Nice!!
