Three Sisters Scottish Ale (4.2% abv) is a dark, fruity, refreshing ale that proves a perennial favourite, and is named after the dramatic range of mountains in Glencoe.

Chocolate Malt helps to give this beer its very attractive dark ruby colour, as well as contributing to some of the toasty and liquorice flavours in the beer.

However, a very large charge of whole-flower hops balances the dark malt character with an abundance of hop fruit flavours. These include dried and fresh fruit flavours as well as some more citrus tones not normally found in such a dark beer.

There’s enough ‘going on’ in Three Sisters to keep even the most demanding real ale aficionado happy, whilst the very approachable fruit makes this a popular drink across the board.

50cl bottle from Gordon and MacPhail, Elgin. Pours dark copper with steady bubbles and a good head. The nose is of ginger biscuits. The taste is of more ginger biscuits and a dry malt finish. The palate is medium bodied with a tangy middle texture and a long, dry but slightly astringent finish. Overall, a solid bitter but not world beating.

Jan 2010: Brown 500ml bottle obtained while visiting St Andrews. Poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ vase shaped pint glass. Dark reddy copper body, clear and clean, a creamy foam of a tan colour sat on top. The produced plenty of lacing as the beer sank down the glass. Malts and toffee esters hit my nose, although it didn’t smell sweet. More malt than anything else in the taste, the toasted/roasted flavour is there throughout the sip. The hops bring in a bitterness towards the end of the mouthfeel making this a very drinkable beer indeed. The 4.2%ABV sits well within the brew, this is a good well balanced bevvy.

9/11/12/11/8/11

Bottled (BZ, BB 04/2011)
Dark ruby-brown color, nice creamy beige head. Aroma of dark bread, licorice and notes of balsamico. Crisp carbonation. Light palate, although decent body. Licorice, caramel, underlying lactose, dried fruits, finish has toasted notes. Aftertaste has some juicy flavors too. Interesting and quite Scottish brew.

500ml bottle bought at Centra Colosseum Park in Oslo and enjoyed at home watching speed skating from Vancouver on TV. Off-white head, with lots of dimples. Solid foam stand atop of a deep, brown body. Rounded aroma of roasted malts containing notes of both chocolate and caramel. Mid-sweet malty taste profile nicely balanced by dark berries and a touch of prunes. Notes of hops to the ending. Easy and pleasant to drink (Tromsø, 13,02.2010
