Three Sisters Scottish Ale (4.2% abv) is a dark, fruity, refreshing ale that proves a perennial favourite, and is named after the dramatic range of mountains in Glencoe.

Chocolate Malt helps to give this beer its very attractive dark ruby colour, as well as contributing to some of the toasty and liquorice flavours in the beer.

However, a very large charge of whole-flower hops balances the dark malt character with an abundance of hop fruit flavours. These include dried and fresh fruit flavours as well as some more citrus tones not normally found in such a dark beer.

There’s enough ‘going on’ in Three Sisters to keep even the most demanding real ale aficionado happy, whilst the very approachable fruit makes this a popular drink across the board.

Bottle, 4.2%. Slightly buttery aroma, hint of aroma hops. Clear brown colour. Very small head. The flavour is malty and slightly teaish. Seems like a teaish hoppiness with a little bite in the finish. I still get a little butter, not much, but it is a bit disturbing.

Bottle from Morrisons, Airdrie. Pleasant chestnut colour with a fluffy, off-white head. Sweet fruitcake aroma with red fruit, nuts and some orange hops. Flavour had plenty of sweet malts, a hint of roastiness, and a dry, citrus finish. An unusual mixture of sweetness and hops but, in the main, it worked pretty well.

Bottle. It pours a clear, copper body under a decent off-white head. Toffee, some roasted malts, a little peat and some fruity hops in the aroma. The flavor has caramel sweetness and some peat. Quite sweet, with a decent bitterness. Rather short finish. Medium body with a nice carbonation. A decent beer, but a bit on the sweet side. Rating: 6-4-6-3-13-3.2. 090508

Bottle. A clear, almost copper colored beer topped by a dense, off-white head. Bready, fruity nose with caramel and roasted malts. Some sweetness in the mouth, medium body, and fruityness, bread, caramel and too little hops. At least for my likings. Rather short finish. A decent beer indeed, but I’d rather have two really good beers than ten pints of decent bitter. But of course, every once in a while that is nice too, and Three Sisters would do that trick. 091016

Big offwhite lasting head, looks like ice cream on top. Deep ruby red body. Fruity roasty peppery hop aroma, very harmonic. Dry roasty fruity wild berry taste with resiny hoppy notes. Thinnish body. Smooth, mild mouthfeel. Dry-acidic burnt wild berry aftertaste with linger metallic peppery notes. Quite nice in some ways, but the combination doesn’t quite work for me. (0.5l bottle, Centra, Oslo.)

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.2%. Deep copper coloured beer, moderate white (slightly off-white?) head. Moderate aroma of malts with some fruity hops, hints of berries. The flavour has notes of lightly roasted malts, hints of caramel, balanced by fruity hops. A moderate bitterness in the aftertaste. Quite good.
