This ale was brewed as a tribute to the eponymous Tibbie Shiels who founded the "Tibbie Shiels Inn" on the shores of St Mary’s loch in the Scottish Borders in 1824 catering to the likes of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Lewis Stevenson. The Inn still serves good food and great beers to this day.
We like to think that she would have been quietly pleased with the resulting dark, full bodied beer with its fine malt flavours and clean fresh hop aftertaste.

Major ingredients are:
Pale ale malt, crystal malt and black malt. Hops are Fuggles, First Gold, Perle and Bramling Cross for aroma.

The beer is names after an old Scottish Landlady and her pub, the rear label tells one all about it, an interesting tale. Anyway, this review is of a 500ml brown bottle, poured into an ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged pint vase during Nov 2010. The beer is a ruby red colour, clear and clean looking. A weak tan coloured head sat on top, the head giving some, but not much lacing. The smell and taste was of malt molasses, too sweet for my normal palate, even though I prefer the sweeter beers. The body wasn’t rich enough, lacking in depth to the carry off the 6%ABV, a strange brew. Didn’t really take to it, but nothing wrong, just my tastebuds not fitting in with the brewers vision of the beers strenghts.

Bottle. Cherry, caramel malt and herbal hops aroma. Dark chestnut color with small head. Sweet toffee and moderately bitter grass hops flavor. Nicely balanced - not too sweet or bitter. Very nice.

50cl bottle from Tesco, Edinburgh. Copper with a fast fading cream head; treacle and malt aromas; strong. chewy malty flavours with a hint of nuts and toffee; the finish is dry and smoky. Very pleasant.
