Heather ale matured in single malt whisky casks. Fraoch celebrates 20 years of brewing with this very special limited edition. 11% alc/vol, triple version: matured in ex-sherry casks previously used to mature single malt speyside whisky for 20 years. The resulting ale has a unique oak / sherry / whisky character, which is best appreciated slightly chilled in a large wine glass. Slainte!
Ingredients: malted barley, oats, wheat, natural heather flowers, myrtle leaves and hops.

Bronze with a slight haze. Slight whiskey notes and lots of tartness, with some late heat. An odd combination of barnyard and tart with some heat and sweet barrel notes. Strange brew - not sure what to make of it.

Bottle, 75cl corked, at Cardinal. It’s a clear, golden beer topped by a small, off-white head. Heather and honey, whisky and sugars, as well as some alcohol in the complex aroma. A bit too much heather in the flavor I think, pale malts, flowers and some whisky too. Sweet, lasting and warming finish. Full-bodied, warming and oily on the palate. Not my choice of barrel aged beer, but a nice one anyway. 091106

Bottle from Beer Ritz, Leeds. The stage was set for this, the grandiose bottle cracked open for Burns night , the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties sat steaming on the table....sadly it was a wee bit of a let down. Poured a hazy copper tinged amber with a small off white head that faded to nowt. Aroma was promising; sweet, vinous and fruity with notes of spice, booze, wood and vanilla. The flavour had a similar make up but was somewhat disappointing in comparison to the nose. Maybe just a bit too sweet, the whisky is evident but not too obtrusive, alcohol was pretty well smothered. Didin’t really pick up on the heather aspect. Some sourness and quite yeasty towards the finish. Wasn’t really sold, but not without some interesting aspects.

75cl corked #5254 A nearly double abv from the original heather version. pours golden with a light hue, thick white head. aroma, yeasty, some champagne yeast, nice herbal, heather nose with mild whiskey scent emanating. flavor, floral/heather is noticeable, some wheat, wood barrel and quicly followed by the whiskey that is mild and at times seems to overpower the floral touch of heather. The palate gains a mild fizzy champagne yeast that meshes itself with the sherry cask adding a mild wine/whiskey like finish.
