Heather ale matured in single malt whisky casks. Fraoch celebrates 20 years of brewing with this very special limited edition. 11% alc/vol, triple version: matured in ex-sherry casks previously used to mature single malt speyside whisky for 20 years. The resulting ale has a unique oak / sherry / whisky character, which is best appreciated slightly chilled in a large wine glass. Slainte!
Ingredients: malted barley, oats, wheat, natural heather flowers, myrtle leaves and hops.

750 ml bottle sampled@RBNAG 2009, Cardinal. Clear golden with a fine, small off-white head. Aroma is spicy, heather, smooth whisky and Madeira alcoholic. Flavor is sweet and rich with some acid, spicy, bitter, malty and distinct whisky. Pretty complex, rather boozy and still surprisingly easy drinkable. The alcohol is clear present, but very smooth. Nice.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Clear, sparkling, cider-like body, thin-medium clumping off-white head. Nose of sour dusty oak, herbs, and green apple, reminding me of a perfume box. Tart, apply body, with heather and other spices, rather thin. There’s a plastic component that was light but a bit unpleasant. Odd yet somewhat compelling.

Bottle: almost clear, light amber coloured, small lacy white head dry fruity sherry and/or balsamico-like nose with a mouldy touch, vanilla and caramel detectable in the background; solid dry bitter-sweet and sour flavour, medium bodied; increasing dry acidity with traces of sherry, malt, balsamico and belgian sour-ales. A fine, extremely well drinkable, but complex hybrid brew........

750ml bottle shared at the DC Local tasting. Pours a hazy orange with an active white head. Heavy carbonation. Smells like a gueze, acidic, sweet, tart, herbal, perfume. Flavor was not at all what I expected, sweet, tart, honey, grass, herbs, medicinal. Finish was a little hot and dry.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a clear amber with a small, rough off-white head. Sweet and subtle whisky aromas. Surprisingly only medium body, sweet caramel and fruit with a distinct woody Sherry edge. Dry and lightly tart with very few traces of the alcohol. Quite fresh and drinkable and honestly very delicious. 141109

Bottle, 11%. Very vinous aroma, like the brandy in chocolate brandy beans, only less sweet. Some vanilla as well. Clear dark golden colour. Very small frothy white head. Distinct vanilla flavour, lots of fresh oak. Good citric note, as if from red wine casks, but this might be from the sherry. The citric note is reminiscent of white wine.
