The original site at Southerness was beside the Solway with the Criffel mountain range behind. This adjoined the birth place of John Paul Jones and like him our premium “Criffel” ale can be a bit of a brigand. Strong, rich and dark amber, with a distinct character of it’s own, largely attributable to three specially selected hop varieties this is brewed with.

Panda at home, thanks to SHIG, 07/03/21. Clear golden amber with a decent off white cap that dissipates edgeward. Nose is dusty fruits, hedgerow, crackers, cereals, pale malts. Taste comprises toasted grains, hint of toffee, biscuit, dull fruit tones, tea leaves. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So so affair ... the twigometer is rising through amber!

Cask at the Steamboat Inn, Carsethorn, near Dumfries. Pale amber with a white head. A light taste at first grows (like any decent bitter) into something that's actually quite more-ish. Light florals, biscuit and a touch of wood, with a dry and moderately bitter finish.

The taste is dry, bitter, wood, leather, toasted nut, a bit chewy, spiced, dried florals and a touch of ash with a drying, slightly tannic finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. A bit chewy and woody. Fair.
