Many Mexican beer styles today are descendants of old Austrian styles, from when Austria ruled Mexico in the late 19th century. Our Dos Perros is made with German Munich malt, English Pale malt, and Chocolate malt, and hopped with Perle and Saaz hops. To lighten the body, as many Mexican brewers do, we add a small portion of flaked maize. The result is a wonderfully bready malt aroma, balanced with some maize sweetness and a noble hop finish.

Buttery malt, somewhat caramelly, herbal bitterness from the hops, which came across more americanized than I would expect from Perle/Saaz. In many ways this beer reminded me a lot of Fat Tire, and I don’t like Fat Tire.

A dark clear brown altbier with a thin big bubbled mocha head. In aroma, light sweet nutty malt, dark fruits, not bad. In mouth, a light sweet nutty malt with light peated notes, a bit watery but decent. Bottle from Oct. 2011.

12 oz. bottle. Deep amber color with thin ring of lace. Nose is caramel malt, brown sugar and an English style malt. Flavor is leaning on the English side for sure. Earthy malt, notes of chocolate and a hint of smoke. Body is light for the Style and has a slick texture. Overall about average.

Sampled from the tap at the Nashville Flying Saucer. Pours a clear amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a bread note that is backed by a hint of sweetness from caramel. Flavor starts with the same bread note but is joined by a deep sweet cookie/corn note in the finish.
