Our Black Wheat arrives to relieve the bleak bore of Wisconsin's winter. Rich and chewy this bottle conditioned weiss is bursting with Midwestern wheat, oats, rye and finished by malted barley. This style is a rare gem even in the Black Forests of Bavaria. We brew it now as an accompaniment to meaty feasts or to sip near a roaring fire.
Expect this beer to pour the deepest black body topped by an opulent head of lip smacking foam. Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel notes brim over the top. Lavish spice aromas of clove and cinnamon are promoted naturally by the yeast we import especially for this most individual of brews. While some find comfort in a familiar glass, this brew will satisfy the bold explorer who dares to be...

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of TheCheeseMan. Pours a hazy and opaque dark brown with and orange hue and an off-white head. Aroma dominated by roasted malts and a whiff of banana and yeast. Medium body, a little roast and very little banana and yeast. Dry finish. Pleasant alright but very far from style - almost closer to a Brown Ale. 130909

12 fl oz bottle, RBSG2009. Pour hazy dark brown with a small off-white head. Roasted and breadish malt aroma with a distinct estery fruity note and mild spiced. Bitter and dry flavoured, minor estery fruity note coming through. Bitter, slight acidic and vague wheaty/breadish malty sweet finish.

Draft at The Old Fashioned, Madison. Deep brown-black color. Sweet and malty, with a very drinkable body and mouthfeel. Some very mild sandy hop balance. Somewhat straightforward Dunkel tastes, yet delightfully impressive.

Pours a very dark, chocolate-mahogany color with a thick head. Clove and spicy/fruity aroma. Flavor is a very complex mix of fruits, spices, and some coffee/chocolate. Fairly heavy for a wheat beer, this would probably go well with food. I picture drinking it near a fire in fall/winter, rather than as a thirst quencher in the summer.

Bottle from CaptainCougar. Appearance of carbonated prune juice- a murky, dirty dark orange-brown, topped by a thin ring of tan carbonation. Complex, inviting aroma I can best characterize as a banana split, with chocolate-covered banana, clove, and caramel notes. Toasty, rich body with a delicate brown sugar sweetness, layered breads, with abundant banana and clove. Distinct chocolate finish. Soft mouthfeel. A fantastic wheat beer.

Bottled. #11 of 31 U.S. beers in honor of American Beer Month! Well, I guess black beer is this year’s IPA. But seriously: Coffee and black stout is the first thing I think of. Completely black body and a big Starbucks Americano type taste. Grainy, but with a clean lager finish that wraps up the roasties and puts them on the rods of the next train out of town. In other words, smooth and mellowed for a black beer. Oh, yeah, and then there are notes of a few cherries in the finish. Sorry I could only find this in a Wisconsin cheese castle at $15 a sixer, I would’ve gotten more.

Cloudy dark brown with foamy, off-white head - full aroma of chocolate, caramel, clove and wheat - yeasty and slightly tart, balanced well with a mild lactic sweetness, cocoa, a hint of caramel - grainy, but medium-dry finish - one of the better New Glarus beers I’ve had.
