Our Black Wheat arrives to relieve the bleak bore of Wisconsin's winter. Rich and chewy this bottle conditioned weiss is bursting with Midwestern wheat, oats, rye and finished by malted barley. This style is a rare gem even in the Black Forests of Bavaria. We brew it now as an accompaniment to meaty feasts or to sip near a roaring fire.

Expect this beer to pour the deepest black body topped by an opulent head of lip smacking foam. Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel notes brim over the top. Lavish spice aromas of clove and cinnamon are promoted naturally by the yeast we import especially for this most individual of brews. While some find comfort in a familiar glass, this brew will satisfy the bold explorer who dares to be...

An unclear brown beer with a light brown head. The aroma is sweet wheat combined with notes of roasted bread. The flavor is also sweet wheaty, but also with notes of malt, and caramel, as well as a roasted end. A good wheat beer.

The same aroma as the solstice the second I opened the bottle with tons of wheat. Once in the glass the aroma also has oatmeal and smoke. Black with a very small head. Complex flavor. Wheat and spices. The roasted aspect is secondary only to the wheat. Rather than roasted chocolate there is roasted oats, like a light oatmeal stout added to the dunkelweizen. Sweet but could be sweeter. Medium body.

2005 bottle at the 3/6/05 Montreal tasting. Served in a tulip, lightly chilled. Very dark for the style, as we all commented, but then someone quickly pointed out that it was New Glarus Black Wheat, and then it was like, "oh ya, good point. . .". So I can’t fault the dark color, and the lovely little tan head covered the body nicely and was retained for most of the sample. Opaque and quite sedimented. Predominantly clove in the aroma, with notes of peanut brittle and dry roast in the background. Flavor, begins with light bananas, dry roast and a bit of moderately dry chocolate. The body is too thin for my tastes, and at the start it was too fizzy, and ended too watery. Salty, chocolate-covered peanuts, roasted malt and a touch of chewy wheat round out the finish.

Thanks to CaptainCougar for sharing this with everyone at KP’s SE Gathering. Dark brown with a tan head. Nutty aroma, but I didn’t get any of the banana/clove thing in mine. Some chocolate. Starts with some sweetness and finishes with just a bit of tang. This remeinded me more of a Brown Ale than a Dunkelweizen. This is one I’d like to try again. Re-rate 6/20/05 Tall brown creamy head. Bready malty aroma with nice banana notes as expected. Sweet flavor, nice wheat tang in the finish. Creamy rich filling. The numbers have been changed to reflect the re-rate.
